A new cytotoxic trichothecene sesquiterpene, verrol 4-acetate, was isolated, along with known macrocyclic trichothene mycotoxins and medicinal styrylpyrones, from cultures of a new deuteromycete Acremonium neo-caledoniae Roquebert et Dupont n. sp., taken from drifting wood in the southwestern lagoon of New Caledonia.

From the 1950s to the present, the main tool for obtaining fungal industrial producers of secondary metabolites remains the so-called classical strain improvement (CSI) methods associated with multi-round random mutagenesis and screening for the level of target products. As a result of the application of such techniques, the yield of target secondary metabolites in high-yielding (HY) strains was increased hundreds of times compared to the wild-type (WT) parental strains. We investigated the cytotoxicity of cephaibol A on MDA-MB-231 cells to elucidate its potential antitumor activity and mechanism. The study found that cephaibol A concentration-dependently blocked the cell cycle in S phase and inhibited cell proliferation.
