Background: Respiratory symptoms (rhinitis, asthma) accompany some skin diseases with a proven immunological or allergic pathogenesis whereas the immunological and allergological findings are sometimes negative in subjects with chronic urticarial skin symptoms and no cause can be found. This paper explores the possibility of airway inflammation in cases of this kind.
Methods: Nonspecific bronchostimulation with methacholine was carried out in 12 subjects with a clinical history of urticaria and negative immunological and allergological findings.
Results: All subjects displayed normal bronchoreactivity (mean PD20 1400 micrograms). The bronchostimulation test (evaluated from the FEV1) was always negative. In the control group the mean PD20 was 720 micrograms.
Conclusions: The fact that these eleven subjects did not display bronchial hyperreactivity suggests that monitoring of their respiratory function is not required.

The aim of this contribution was to highlight the "favorable" and "unfavorable" roles of domestic and non-domestic animals on airway sensitization processes and on the type/severity of the clinical symptoms induced by their exposure. We performed a literature research in MEDLINE for allergic manifestations and animals. Pets can be "allergy friends" through mechanisms related to hygiene hypothesis and translational aspects, the dual role of IgG4 antibodies for pets, and their promising role as healthcare service animals (dogs).

Background: Venom-allergic patients are frequently double-sensitized to honeybee venom (BV) and Vespula venom (VV). Genuine double allergy is uncommon.
Objectives: To assess whether a quantitative comparison of BV- and VV-specific IgE levels permits an identification of the culprit venom in double-sensitized patients, and to evaluate whether independent sensitization to BV- and VV-specific components corresponds to an indication for double immunotherapy.

Many food allergens not actually included in the European priority list of allergenic foods have the potential to cause severe allergic reactions and could escape correct identification and behave as "hidden allergens". Moreover, the adoption in recent years of novel diets based on plant products and new sustainable foods or the use of specific food additives have contributed to the onset of new emerging allergens of public health importance. The knowledge of hidden allergens is important both for physicians and for patients to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of food allergies, in order to decrease eventual improper diagnosis of idiopathic anaphylaxis.
