An oxidative detoxification of sulfite, which originates from sulfur dioxide taken up into a leaf, has not yet been fully understood. In this study, we discuss that redox reactions between sulfite and H2O2 have an important role for the detoxification of sulfite. Sulfite was oxidized by H2O2 and during the redox reaction, oxygen consumption was observed. The oxygen consumption was partially inhibited by superoxide dismutase, indicating that O2- is generated during the redox reaction. Oxidation of sulfite by H2O2 was also observed in the presence of ascorbic acid, and during the oxidation, no significant oxidation of ascorbic acid and no consumption of oxygen were observed. Sulfite inhibited catalase of cell-free extracts of spinach, pea and broad bean leaves. These results suggest that when leaves are fumigated with SO2 in the light, catalase is inactivated resulting in the accumulation of H2O2 in leaves, which can oxidize sulfite without generating active oxygen species like O2- as long as ascorbate is present in leaves.

Biobleaching is an eco-friendly strategy that can reduce costs and pollution in the pulp and paper industry. Herein, an effective biobleaching approach was proposed using a novel multi-enzyme complex. The multi-enzyme complex was constructed based on mini-cellulosome scaffolding protein integrated with laccase (BpLac) and xylanase (BpXyn) from Bacillus pumilus.

Despite ample evidence that extensive water-rock interactions occurred under a CO-dominated atmosphere on early Mars, carbonate minerals are relatively rare at the surface. One possibility to explain this scarcity is that carbonates were initially abundant, but were later destroyed when atmospheric conditions changed, particularly as a result of volcanism releasing large volumes of sulfur dioxide SO into the atmosphere. However, despite some early theoretical and experimental results, no study has investigated the stability of the most common carbonates (Ca, Mg and Fe) in the presence of abundant SO gas.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores advanced oxidation processes using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to improve the breakdown of synthetic dyes in wastewater.
  • Four new MOFs were synthesized, each with different structures and coordination of cobalt ions, and were tested as catalysts for degrading the dye X3B through sulfite activation.
  • Results showed that two specific catalysts (1/SO and 4/SO) had much higher efficiency in degrading X3B, while the others were less effective; the processes relied on factors like how well the dye was absorbed and the presence of coordination vacancies in the metal ions.

The study examined the beneficial effects of the synergistic deinking and delignification process on the quality of recycled pulp. By utilizing a mixture of neutral sodium sulfite, sodium carbonate, and fungal hemicellulase enzyme, the research demonstrated that the paper achieved enhancements in brightness, whiteness, tensile and burst indices, while also exhibiting reduced yellowness and ERIC in comparison to paper derived from chemically deinked pulp. The high-resolution ESCA analysis demonstrated a reduction in lignin surface coverage, and enhancement in the O/C atomic ratios.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how copper ions improve the oxidation of lignosulfonates using hydrogen peroxide (HO) in alkaline conditions, significantly increasing conversion efficiency by reducing partial oxidation.
  • Copper ions interact with lignosulfonates to form complexes that enhance the generation of hydroxyl radicals and facilitate redox cycling, countering the negative effects of sulfonic groups.
  • The research offers new insights into oxidative degradation mechanisms, presenting a simplified method that could be beneficial for industrial applications, particularly in processing woody biomass for valuable products.
