Data are submitted on the scientific potential of the system of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, its constituent parts, some features of financing and volume of scientific research work done in 1998. Results are presented of scientific investigations in basic fields of medicine and priority lines of activity of medical science. The importance of introduction of scientific developments into the health care practice is emphasized. Prerequisites for further development of sectorial medical science under present-day social and economic conditions are analyzed.
