Two-component flavin-dependent monooxygenases are of great interest as biocatalysts for the production of pharmaceuticals and other relevant molecules, as they catalyze chemically important reactions such as hydroxylation, epoxidation and halogenation. The monooxygenase components require a separate flavin reductase, which provides the necessary reduced flavin cofactor. The tryptophan halogenase Thal from Streptomyces albogriseolus is a well-characterized two-component flavin-dependent halogenase.

New particle formation from isoprene under upper-tropospheric conditions.

Nature

December 2024

Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research/Physics, Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland.

Aircraft observations have revealed ubiquitous new particle formation in the tropical upper troposphere over the Amazon and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Although the vapours involved remain unknown, recent satellite observations have revealed surprisingly high night-time isoprene mixing ratios of up to 1 part per billion by volume (ppbv) in the tropical upper troposphere. Here, in experiments performed with the CERN CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets) chamber, we report new particle formation initiated by the reaction of hydroxyl radicals with isoprene at upper-tropospheric temperatures of -30 °C and -50 °C.

The [Fe]/HO oxidation system has found wide applications in chemistry and biology. Halogenation with this [Fe]/HO oxidation protocol and halide (X) in the biological system is well established with the identification of heme-iron-dependent haloperoxidases. However, mimicking such halogenation process is rarely explored for practical use in organic synthesis.

Recent Progress in Steroid C(sp)-H Functionalization.

Chem Rec

December 2024

Faculty of Chemistry, University of Bialystok, Ciolkowskiego 1 K, 15-245, Bialystok, Poland.

Selective C-H functionalization methods could provide a valuable tool for synthesizing different steroid derivatives, which is essential not only in contexts of developing novel synthetic methodology but also as a direct way for gathering the analogues needed for studying the structure-activity relationships and obtaining biologically active compounds. The review discusses recent examples of steroid C-H functionalization to various C-X derivatives (C-O, C-C, C-N, C-S, and C-halogen) using available methods emphasizing their scope and limitations.

Iodine in nuclear waste can cause serious environment pollution and health risks, and has thus driven more development of materials for iodine capture. Herein, a novel porous pillar[6]arene-based polymer (P-P6APs) was easily prepared as a supramolecular adsorbent for iodine a one-step crosslinking reaction between per-hydroxylated pillar[6]arene and decafluorobiphenyl. Nitrogen adsorption tests demonstrated that this material possessed a satisfactory surface area ( = 366 m g) and pore diameter (3.
