Background: Traumatic and thermal injuries result in a state of systemic immune suppression, yet the mechanisms that underlie its development are poorly understood. Released from injured muscle and lysed red blood cells, heme is a damage associated molecular pattern with potent immune modulatory properties. Here, we measured plasma concentrations of total heme in over 200 traumatic and thermally-injured patients in order to examine its relationship with clinical outcomes and post-injury immune suppression.

Background: Fatigue is common in patients with chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, often with a severe impact on the patient's daily life. From a biological point of view, fatigue can be regarded as an element of the sickness behavior response, a coordinated set of responses induced by pathogens to enhance survival during an infection and immunological danger. The mechanisms are not fully understood but involve activation of the innate immune system, with pro-inflammatory cytokines, in particular interleukin (IL)-1β, acting on cerebral neurons.

Purpose: A protein quantitative trait locus (pQTL) analysis recently revealed a strong association between hemopexin (HPX) levels and genetic variants at the complement factor H () locus. In this study, we aimed to determine HPX plasma levels in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and to compare them with those in controls. We also investigated whether genetic variants at the locus are associated with HPX plasma levels.

Objective: To quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the proteomic profile of teeth with acute apical abscesses (AAA) compared with teeth with chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) and to correlate the expression of detected human proteins with their main biological functions.
Materials And Methods: Samples were obtained from root canals of 9 patients diagnosed with AAA and 9 with CAP. Samples were analyzed by reversed-phase liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry.

Sepsis is one of the leading cause of death worldwide. Recently, several studies suggested that free-hemoglobin and heme derived from hemolysis are important factors which may be associated with severity of septic patients including COVID-19. In other words, hemolysis-derived products enhance the inflammatory responses as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in both intravascular and extravascular space.
