In the last decades atopic diseases and among them the incidence of atopic asthma has increased significantly worldwide, first of all in countries of higher technical civilization. In many places the incidence has doubled in 10-20 years compared to the previous period. The investigations have provided a lot of new data about genetic alterations in the background of the disease but the modifications in the genetic material cannot be responsible for the increased frequency of the disease in such a short time. It has become clear that sensibilization in connection with allergens begins in the fetus and continues in the early period after birth. Environmental allergens, especially indoor ones, the allergen burden in extrauterine life, the nutrition factors and later airway inflammations caused by virus--all contribute to the spread of atopy. The harms of civilization contribute to the dominance of T helper 2 cells and therefore to atopy in our immunosystem. It seem, that otherwise useful components like the decrease of infective diseases, vaccinations, better hygienic conditions and "western" lifestyle also manipulate our immunosystem in the direction of atopy. Our existing knowledge can provide profilactic tasks against unfavourable processes only to a very small extent.

The inhibitory effect of Hypericum japonicum on H9N2 avian influenza virus.

Adv Biotechnol (Singap)

November 2024

State Key Laboratory of Biocontrol, School of Life Sciences, Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, China.

The H9N2 subtype of avian influenza virus (AIV) causes severe immunosuppression and high mortality in view of its frequent co-infection with other pathogens, resulting in significant economic losses in the poultry industry. Current vaccines provide suboptimal immune protection against H9N2 AIV owing to antigenic variations, highlighting the urgent need for safe and effective antiviral drugs for the prevention and treatment of this virus. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effects of Hypericum japonicum extract on H9N2 AIV.

Oxidative stress represents a pivotal mechanism in the pathogenesis of numerous chronic diseases. The Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1-transcription factor NF-E2 p45-related factor 2 (KEAP1-NRF2) pathway plays a crucial role in maintaining redox homeostasis and regulating a multitude of biological processes such as inflammation, protein homeostasis, and metabolic homeostasis. In this paper, we present the findings of recent studies on the KEAP1-NRF2 pathway, which have revealed that it is aberrantly regulated and induces oxidative stress injury in a variety of diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases, respiratory diseases, digestive diseases, and cancer.

Management of presymptomatic juvenile patients with late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD).

Neuromuscul Disord

January 2025

ERN-NMD Center for Neuromuscular Disorders of Messina - Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, University of Messina, Messina, Italy. Electronic address:

Late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD) includes patients from 1 year of age to adulthood. The vast heterogeneity in clinical manifestations and disease progression is not fully explained; however, a short disease duration and a young age seem to be good predictors of a better response to treatment. For this purpose, we investigated and followed up a cohort of 13 juvenile patients with LOPD from the clinical and therapeutic point of view, mainly pointing out the transition from presymptomatic to symptomatic status.

Academic interest in scientists who regularly appear in the media dates back to Rae Goodell's seminal book "The visible scientists", in which she lists distinct characteristics of visible scientists, including being controversial, articulate, colorful, and reputable as a scientist. Visible scientists thus share relevant media-related characteristics that stand out in their portrayal as a group and are reminiscent of other celebrities' characteristics. However, questions arise: what is special about the celebrity being a scientist? How many and what types of scientists fall into this category? What are the peers' and the public's expectations towards the social role of the visible scientist? To date, work on visible scientists has focused on theorizing them in the context of the relationship between science and its publics and empirical studies have mainly sought to characterize visible scientists and focused on single countries.
