The purpose of this study was to investigate a protocol for the determination of VO2 max utilizing a motor-driven skate treadmill (ST). On separate days, 6 male hockey players completed a ST and a cycle ergometer (BK) VO2 max protocol. The results showed no significant difference between the ST and BK protocols for relative (60.4 +/- 5.09 vs. 59.0 +/- 8.31 ml.kg-1.min-1) and absolute VO2 max values (4.51 +/- 0.50 vs. 4.39 +/- 0.59 L.min-1), respectively. Significantly higher HR max was recorded during the ST protocol (202.3 +/- 4.27 vs. 200.7 +/- 4.55 b.min-1) (p < 0.05). Peak VE and VT were nonsignificant between the two conditions. However, peak f was higher for the ST protocol (63.0 +/- 7.56 vs. 60.2 +/- 7.76 breath.min-1) (p < 0.05). Although the physiological response to both protocols was similar, the ST protocol replicates a hockey stride, which may provide more applicable information for the development of training programs.

Regular exercise leads to various adaptations and many pathophysiological changes that significantly benefit exercise stamina and overall health, both in the general population and in patients with chronic cardiovascular diseases. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a form of exercise training that consists of short repetitive bursts of intense workouts that push the body to more than 90 percent of its maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max) and more than 75 percent of maximal power, with in between periods of low-intensity exercise for recovery, followed by a cool-down period. HIIT has unquestionably emerged as a powerful and effective intervention in rehabilitating patients, particularly those recovering from heart attacks and strokes.

Purpose: We investigated if a bout of HIIE is more efficacious at reducing postprandial hyperglycemia than an isocaloric bout of MICE.
Methods: Nineteen healthy physically active individuals (21% women) completed three trials in a randomized order: i) HIIE cycling consisting of 5 bouts of 4 min at 83 ± 9% of subjects' maximal oxygen consumption (V˙O2 MAX) with active recoveries at 53 ± 8% for a total of 50 min; ii) MICE cycling at 65 ± 8% of V˙O2 MAX for 50 min, and iii) CONTROL no exercise. All trials were followed by a standard oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) ingesting 74 grams of glucose traced with 1 gram of uniformly labeled [13C]-glucose.
