Objective: To present our experience of non-parasitic hepatic cysts.

Design: Retrospective study.

Setting: University Hospital, Greece.

Subjects: 12 consecutive patients with symptomatic non-parasitic hepatic cysts operated on during the 7-year period 1990-97 inclusive.

Interventions: Wide unroofing of the hepatic cysts.

Main Outcome Measures: Persistence or recurrence of symptoms and recurrence of cysts.

Results: Symptoms persisted or recurred in 2/12 patients and cysts recurred in 2/9 who had ultrasound scans.

Conclusion: Surgical treatment of non-parasitic hepatic cysts was effective and safe.
