Introduction: Rural regions generally report higher smoking rates than urban centers, which increases the risk of tobacco related harms and consequences, and makes promoting smoking cessation in these areas a priority. Mass distribution of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) by postal mail has been found to increase the odds of successful cessation attempts. Understanding factors that contribute to the use of NRT could help maximize this intervention's effectiveness.

Environmental historical geography is a diverse, dynamic and active subfield with close connections to environmental history. Here, I examine developments in three overarching and overlapping themes within the subfield: environmental reconstruction, environmental knowledges and discourses, and environmental impacts and interventions. For each area, I highlight recent approaches to, and applications of, environmental historical geography.

Context: 3,4-Bis(3-nitrofurazan-4-yl) furoxan (DNTF) is a typical low-melting-point, high-energy-density compound that can serve as a cast carrier explosive. Therefore, understanding the safety of DNTF under different casting processes is of great significance for its efficient application. This study employed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effects of temperature and pressure on the self-diffusion characteristics and mechanical sensitivity of DNTF.

How are autoreactive T cells induced and regulated in patients with autoimmune disease? This question lies at the core of understanding autoimmune disease pathologies, yet it has remained elusive due to host variability and the complexity of the immune system. In this issue of the JCI, Kramer and colleagues used autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) as a model to explore the maintenance of autoreactive CD4+ T cells specific to O-phosphoseryl-tRNA:selenocysteine tRNA synthase (SepSecS). The findings provide insight into the interaction between T cells and B cells in AIH pathogenesis that may reflect a shared mechanism among other autoimmune diseases.
