AI Article Synopsis

  • The study aimed to compare the incidence of nonorganic sway patterns in patients with potential secondary gain (like lawsuits) against those without such claims.
  • A retrospective review was conducted on 100 patients, split into two groups: one with pending claims and one without, utilizing various evaluation methods including computerized dynamic posturography (CDP).
  • Results showed that patients with secondary gain were younger, had more normal audiovestibular evaluations, and exhibited a significantly higher rate of nonorganic sway patterns compared to the control group, highlighting the need for clinicians to be cautious when assessing patients with legal or compensation claims.

Article Abstract

Objectives: To determine the incidence of nonorganic sway patterns on computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) among patients with potential secondary gain compared with patients without any obvious secondary gain.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of 100 patients who underwent clinical evaluation, audiometry, electronystagmography, and CDP was undertaken. Group 1 consisted of 50 patients who were randomly selected from a group who had pending lawsuits, worker's compensation claims, or disability claims. Group 2 consisted of 50 randomly selected patients who had no pending legal status, worker's compensation claims, or disability claims. Previously published criteria for nonorganic sway patterns were then applied to each group. Statistical analysis was performed.

Results: The average age of group 1 patients was 43.8 years compared with 63.2 years for group 2 patients (P < 0.0001). Among group 1 patients 50% had normal audiovestibular evaluations compared with only 4% of group 2 patients (P < 0.0001). Nonorganic sway patterns were found in 76% of group 1 patients, but only in 8% of group 2 patients (P < 0.0001).

Conclusion: Patients who have the potential for secondary gain are generally younger and have a much higher prevalence of normal audiovestibular evaluations and a much higher prevalence of nonorganic sway patterns on CDP. A high degree of clinical suspicion should be maintained when evaluating the dizzy patient who has a pending lawsuit, worker's compensation claim, or disability claim.

Purpose: Anterior chamber air injection (ACAI) is a surgical technique used to decrease the occurrence of postoperative intraocular lens (IOL) haptic dislocation following phacovitrectomy with gas/air tamponade. The impact of this technique on IOL stability remains uncertain, prompting the design of this study to investigate further.

Methods: This study included 51 eyes of 51 patients who underwent phacovitrectomy with gas/air tamponade.

Background: The rapid shift to video consultation services during the COVID-19 pandemic has raised concerns about exacerbating existing health inequities, particularly for disadvantaged populations. Intersectionality theory provides a valuable framework for understanding how multiple dimensions of disadvantage interact to shape health experiences and outcomes.

Objective: This study aims to explore how multiple dimensions of disadvantage-specifically older age, limited English proficiency, and low socioeconomic status-intersect to shape experiences with digital health services, focusing on video consultations.

Background: Health care innovation faces significant challenges, including system inertia and diverse stakeholders, making regulated market access pathways essential for facilitating the adoption of new technologies. The German Digital Healthcare Act, introduced in 2019, offers a model by enabling digital health applications (DiGAs) to be reimbursed by statutory health insurance, improving market access and patient empowerment. However, the factors influencing the success of these pathways in driving innovation remain unclear.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) primarily originates from exposure to tobacco smoke, although factors, such as air pollution and exposure to chemicals, also play a role. One of the primary treatments for COPD is oxygen therapy, which helps manage dyspnea and improve survival rates. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies have demonstrated significant potential in monitoring patients with chronic diseases, offering new avenues for enhancing patient care and disease management.

Purpose: After recent policy and practice changes, health care schools are expected to involve patients as partners in the management, design, and delivery of professional curricula. However, what these partnerships mean for academic communities and the processes needed to support them are not yet understood. This study examines what involving patients as partners within an academic community means for key stakeholders.
