[Hearing status of Robin sequence patients].

Ann Otolaryngol Chir Cervicofac

Service d'O.R.L., Hôpital Robert Debré, Paris.

Published: December 1999

Objective: To determine wether Robin sequence is a risk factor for conductive and/or sensorineural hearing loss.

Patients: 13 children with type III Robin sequence, admitted in our institution between 1984 and 1997 for tracheotomy were enrolled in this retrospective study.

Methods: Each child had several audiological evaluations including subjective and objective methods adapted to their age. Subjective methods were audiometric tests, objective methods were Click Evoqued Otoacoustic Emissions and Auditory Brainstem Response.

Results: 3 children had normal hearing, 10 children had a conductive hearing loss caused by middle ear effusion, 4 patients had also a congenital permanent sensorineural evolutive hearing loss. Among the 4 infants with a sensorineural hearing loss, 2 had a polymalformative syndrome, and 2 had an isolated Robin sequence.

Conclusion: Robin sequence is a risk factor for sensorineural hearing loss and conductive hearing loss. This hearing loss should be assessed as soon as possible after birth by otoscopy, click-evoqued otoacoustic emissions, auditory brainstem response and audiometric tests.

Importance: Defensive gun use (DGU) is cited as a rationale for permissive firearm-carrying policies; however, no consensus exists on how frequently DGU occurs.

Objective: To examine the frequency of DGU relative to gun violence exposure (GVE) in a sample of firearm owners drawn from a nationally representative sample of US adults.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This survey study used data from a cross-sectional, self-reported survey administered via KnowledgePanel, a probability-based panel, between May 15 and May 28, 2024.

A 45-year-old deaf man presented with a right cerebral glioma to be resected via an awake craniotomy with language mapping. Deaf patients require special consideration of their unique communication needs. We describe the anesthetic management in detail, including operating room environment accommodations of lighting, positioning, pulse oximetry probe placement, and obviating the operating room mask protocol for the sign language interpreter.

Impact of hearing loss on brain signal variability in older adults under different auditory load conditions.

Key Laboratory of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Ministry of Education, Beijing Institute of Otolaryngology, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Introduction: The moment-by-moment variability in brain signals, a newly recognized indicator, demonstrates both the adaptability of an individual's brain as a unique trait and the distribution of neural resources within that individual in response to constantly shifting task requirements. This study aimed to explore brain signal variability in older adults using oxyhemoglobin (HbO) variability derived from fNIRS during tasks with increasing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) loads and to assess the effects of varying degrees of hearing loss on speech recognition performance and related brain signal variability patterns.

Methods: Eighty-one participants were categorized into three groups: healthy controls ( = 30, aged 65.

Purpose: Prior studies have demonstrated the potential side effects of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) inhibition for thyroid eye disease (TED) including hearing loss. In this study, we assessed changes in functional vision including visual field testing and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), clinical examination parameters, and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) biomarkers in patients who received insulin growth factor receptor-1 (IGF-R1) inhibition with teprotumumab for TED.

Design: Retrospective, noncomparative cohort.
