In these heady days of genomic enterprise, the wet-bench geneticist may wonder what the future holds in store for those who explore biology in the laboratory. We argue that the goal of genomics is to serve geneticists.

Diverse fungi colonize plant roots worldwide and include species from many orders of the phylum Ascomycota. These fungi include taxa with dark septate hyphae that colonize grass roots and may modulate plant responses to stress. We describe a novel group of fungal isolates and evaluate their effects on the grass in vitro.

Background: Human Cytomegalovirus virus (HCMV) is a worldwide virus that causes no serious symptoms in most adults. However, HCMV infection during pregnancy, it may lead to a series of serious complications, such as hearing loss, mental retardation, visual impairment, microcephaly and developmental retardation.
Aim: The aim of this study was to develop a simple, low dependence on equipment and accurate method for HCMV detection based on the recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) and lateral flow chromatography strip (LFS) reading.

is a common genus of dark septate fungi-a group of ascomycetes in semiarid regions. A survey reported and a distinct lineage as abundant root-associated fungi of foundational grasses in North America. Fungi were isolated, and metabarcode data were obtained from sequencing of fungal communities of grass roots in the United States.

The fungus (Fo) is widely known for causing wilt disease in over 100 different plant species. Endophytic interactions of Fo with plants are much more common, and strains pathogenic on one plant species can even be beneficial endophytes on another species. However, endophytic and beneficial interactions have been much less investigated at the molecular level, and the genetic basis that underlies endophytic versus pathogenic behavior is unknown.

Roots remain an understudied site of complex and important biological interactions mediating plant productivity. In grain and bioenergy crops, grass root specialized metabolites (GRSM) are central to key interactions, yet our basic knowledge of the chemical language remains fragmentary. Continued improvements in plant genome assembly and metabolomics are enabling large-scale advances in the discovery of specialized metabolic pathways as a means of regulating root-biotic interactions.
