Potable water, fruit juices and soft drinks are some of the most widespread beverages in the habitual diet, and they can contribute to chromium dietary intake. We determined the concentration of chromium in 90 different samples of beverages widely consumed in Spain. Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry was used to analyze samples processed with a HNO3-V2O5 acid digestion pretreatment. In water samples Cr was directly determined. We verified the sensitivity, accuracy and precision of the method and ruled out matrix interferences. In analyzed samples, chromium values ranged from not detectable to 11.80 micrograms/l in potable water, from not detectable to 17.60 micrograms/l in fruit juices and from 3.60 to 60.50 micrograms/l in soft drinks. The chromium levels we encountered are low and the contribution of non-alcoholic beverages to dietary intake of this element, have been estimated to be 0.41 microgram/day in the common Spanish diet.

Maintaining proper hydration is crucial for human health, physiological functions, and cognitive performance. This study sought to determine the hydration status and the microbial safety of tap water in an urban setting (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Campus) and a rural community (Adjamesu) in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The water safety perception and hydration status of 171 study participants aged 10-61 years were assessed.

A new rhodamine based turn on florescent probe ()-3',6'-bis(ethylamino)-2-(((6-methoxy-2-oxo-1,2-dihydroquinolin-3-yl)methylene)amino)-2',7'-dimethylspiro[isoindoline-1,9'-xanthen]-3-one (RME) was efficiently synthesized through a simple condensation reaction of 2-amino-3',6'-bis(ethylamino)-2',7'-dimethylspiro[isoindoline-1,9'-xanthen]-3-one and 6-methoxy-2-oxo-1,2-dihydroquinoline-3-carbaldehyde. The receptor RME is highly non-fluorescent and when copper ions (Cu ions) are added in DMF/water (1 : 2, v/v) medium, the receptor RME exhibits a specific "turn-on" colorimetric and fluorometric response. Moreover, RME binding with Cu ions produced a remarkable color variation that was perceptible to the human eye, changing from colorless to pink.

Objectives: To investigate the effects of selenium on functional and histopathological changes and mRNA expression levels of insulin-like growth factors 1 and 2 (IGF-1 and -2) and aquaporins 4 and 5 (AQP-4 and -5) in 131I-induced damaged rat parotid glands.
Methods: Rats were divided into three groups: iodotherapy-with-selenium, iodotherapy-only, and control. Rats in the iodotherapy-with-selenium group were intragastrically administered 131I on the first day and selenomethionine through drinking water.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of parasitic infections in market-sold aquatic products in Shanghai Municipality, and to understand the knowledge and practice towards food-borne parasitic diseases among residents, so as to provide insights into the surveillance and control of food-borne parasitic diseases.
Methods: Freshwater products, seawater products and pickled products were randomly obtained from agricultural trade markets, supermarkets, retail stores and restaurants in Huangpu, Putuo, Minhang and Qingpu districts of Shanghai Municipality from 2020 to 2023. Parasite metacercariae and larvae were detected in these aquatic products using pressing method, digestion method and the dissection method, and the detection of parasitic infection was compared in different types of aquatic products.

Objective: To analyze the consumption frequency and factors associated with hookah usage.
Methods: This cross-sectional study involved adults, hookah users, residing in the city of Curitiba. Hookah groups were contacted on social networking sites via an invitation that contained a link to the questionnaire, which comprised 21 questions covering demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, user profiles, use of cigarettes and alcohol, symptoms, and perceptions of the risks of hookah use.
