Conserved polymerase chain reaction primers fail in diagnosis of parasitic infections.

J Parasitol

Published: October 1999

We demonstrate that a set of previously described polymerase chain reaction primers used for detection of hemogregarines in reptiles will also amplify the same region of the 18S rRNA gene of reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and insects and thus should not be used for molecular diagnosis. These same primers have also been used to differentiate 2 species of Plasmodium that infect lizards. We provide evidence that the observed variance may have been dependent on parasitemia and not representative of actual molecular differences between the 2 parasite species.

Background: Children with non-syndromic cleft lip with or without palate (CL ± P) may present alterations in dental development. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to compare the dental age (DA) between children with and without CL ± P, and whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes encoding growth factors are associated with DA variations.

Methods: Children aged between 5 and 14 years with and without CL ± P were recruited to participate in this study.

Relationship between mucin gene polymorphisms and different types of gallbladder stones.

BMC Med Genomics

January 2025

Department of Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery, Shenzhen People's Hospital, No.1017 Dongmen North Road, Shenzhen, 518020, Guangdong Province, China.

Background: Gallstones, a common surgical condition globally, affect around 20% of patients. The development of gallstones is linked to abnormal cholesterol and bilirubin metabolism, reduced gallbladder function, insulin resistance, biliary infections, and genetic factors. In addition to these factors, research has shown that mucins play a role in gallstone formation.

Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are at a higher risk of cardiovascular (CV) complications and mortality compared to the general population. This study aimed to investigate the genetic polymorphisms of KCNN2, a key gene encoding a subtype of small-conductance calcium-activated potassium (SK) channels, which regulate an important SK current pathway potentially involved in the development of CV complications, particularly arrhythmias, in ESRD patients. A total of 169 ESRD patients were enrolled in this study.

circLOC375190 promotes autophagy through modulation of the mTORC1/TFEB axis in acute ischemic stroke-induced neurological injury.

Clinics (Sao Paulo)

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Daqing Oilfield General Hospital, Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province, China. Electronic address:

Objective: The authors explored differentially expressed circRNAs in Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS) and revealed the role and potential downstream molecular mechanisms of circLOC375190.

Methods: circLOC375190 expression was modulated by lentiviral injection in the brain of transient Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion (tMCAO) mice. Neurological dysfunction was assessed, as well as infarction size, histopathological changes, and neuronal apoptosis in tMCAO mice.

Preventing bacterial infection and accelerating wound closure are critical for wound healing. Herein, a novel multifunctional polyvinyl alcohol-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVA-PVP) microneedle (MN) patch embedded with enzyme-like activity (CoFe)(S) (CFS) nanoparticles and metal ions (Co and Fe) was systematically synthesized for the management of bacteria-infected wounds. CFS regulated redox homeostasis and achieved bacterial eradication while concomitantly alleviating oxidative damage.
