Idiopathic subglottic stenosis is a rare condition. The records of five patients with idiopathic subglottic stenosis treated between 1989 and 1998 were reviewed. All were female and had similar clinical and histopathologic features. Endoscopic dilatation or/and radial CO2 laser and dilatation were successful in maintaining the airway of all five patients without tracheotomy. The pathogenesis of idiopathic subglottic stenosis is strictly speculative, for this reason we advocate a conservative approach.

Diagnosis of subglottic stenosis remains greatly a challenge for physicians due to case rarity and presentation of symptoms imitating several other more prevalent medical disorders. Idiopathic subglottic stenosis most often occurs in previously healthy perimenopausal Caucasian women. Several cases have reported symptom progression and increased stenosis, during or in between pregnancies in younger women.

Subglottic stenosis (SGS) presents a rare, yet challenging condition characterized by airway obstruction below the glottis, with diverse etiologies ranging from congenital to acquired factors like intubation or autoimmune diseases. Diagnosis and management of SGS during pregnancy are particularly complex due to limited literature and diagnostic consensus. This article presents a case of a 26-year-old pregnant woman presenting with escalating dyspnea and stridor attributed to SGS, most likely secondary to idiopathic etiology.

Objectives: Idiopathic subglottic stenosis (ISS) is an airway stricture between larynx and trachea, within 1 cm from the vocal cords. Resection-reconstruction present technical issues because of the need to resect the anterior portion of the cricoid cartilage, but not the posterior plate beyond which the recurrent laryngeal nerves access the vocal cords. The main surgical challenge consists of the minute airway calibre short below the cords, ensuing after the resection.

Background: Benign airway stenoses are complex disorders that present with progressive dyspnoea, stridor, and significant respiratory distress. These conditions have a high recurrence rate and despite the plethora of endoscopic and open techniques available for treatment, the outcomes are variable. Our primary was to determine the pre-operative factors associated with an increased hazard of cricotracheal resection (CTR)/tracheal resection (TR) and reconstruction in cases of benign subglottic and tracheal strictures.

Objective: Serial intralesional steroid injections (SILSI) are increasingly used in the treatment of idiopathic subglottic stenosis (iSGS) and auto-immune related subglottic stenosis (SGS), which are both known for their high rate of recurrences. SILSI could potentially prolong the time to re-intervention. We evaluated the effects of adjuvant SILSI in iSGS and auto-immune related SGS-patients on time to reintervention and spirometry results.
