The problems of terminology are discussed, as well as classification and definition of sepsis. Comparative analysis of traditional for our country and up-to-date foreign classifications is carried out. The criteria for diagnosis of sepsis are discussed. On the basis of 20-year experience in examination and treatment of patients with sepsis, the authors set forth their own stand, suggesting two varieties of sepsis for consideration: common complication of surgical infection, a rare disease.

Crit Care

July 2024

Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Réanimation Polyvalente, Dupuytren University Hospital, CHU de Limoges, 2 Avenue Martin Luther King, 87042, Limoges Cedex, France.

Implementation of biomarkers in sepsis and septic shock in emergency situations, remains highly challenging. This viewpoint arose from a public-private 3-day workshop aiming to facilitate the transition of sepsis biomarkers into clinical practice. The authors consist of international academic researchers and clinician-scientists and industry experts who gathered (i) to identify current obstacles impeding biomarker research in sepsis, (ii) to outline the important milestones of the critical path of biomarker development and (iii) to discuss novel avenues in biomarker discovery and implementation.

The Georgia Quality Improvement Program (GQIP) surgical collaborative participating hospitals have shown consistently poor performance in the post-operative sepsis category of National Surgical Quality Improvement Program data as compared with national benchmarks. We aimed to compare crude versus risk-adjusted post-operative sepsis rankings to determine high and low performers amongst GQIP hospitals. The cohort included intra-abdominal general surgery patients across 10 collaborative hospitals from 2015 to 2020.

Understanding the biases to sepsis surveillance and quality assurance caused by inaccurate coding in administrative health data.

Infection

April 2024

Department of Anesthesiology and Operative Intensive Care Medicine (CCM, CVK), Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, corporate member of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Augustenburger Platz 1, 13353, Berlin, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers wanted to know if hospital data on sepsis (a serious infection) was correct enough to help make decisions about healthcare.
  • They checked records from 10,334 patients in 10 hospitals in Germany to see if the doctors correctly mentioned sepsis in their notes.
  • They found that sometimes sepsis was missed or not written down, which means earlier reports of how many people had sepsis were too low, and hospitals varied a lot in how well they identified it.

Background: Sepsis is the leading cause of death in intensive care units (ICUs), and its timely detection and treatment improve clinical outcome and survival. Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) refers to the concurrent fulfillment of at least two out of the following four clinical criteria: tachycardia, tachypnea, abnormal body temperature, and abnormal leukocyte count. While SIRS was controversially abandoned from the current sepsis definition, a dynamic SIRS representation still has potential for sepsis prediction and diagnosis.

Calprotectin as a diagnostic marker for sepsis: A meta-analysis.

Front Cell Infect Microbiol

December 2022

Department of Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Beijing Chao-yang Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Introduction: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition, and biomarkers are needed to diagnose sepsis fast and accurately. We aimed to perform this meta-analysis to investigate the diagnostic value of calprotectin on sepsis in critically ill patients.

Methods: The investigators searched MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library.
