Mechanisms in Hematology is a book with an accompanying interactive CD-ROM designed to assemble basic concepts that underlie clinical understanding and progress. It is presented as a concise text with a series of diagrams that distill diffuse information into a compact form. The interactive CD, in particular, brings many of the processes "to life" as details of the more complex pathways are conveyed in clear visual images. The text begins with the basic molecular biology that underlies hematological and oncological physiology/pathology-cell signaling, adhesion molecules, and apoptosis. This is followed by sections, among others, on hematopoiesis, iron, B12, and folate metabolism, neutrophil function, immunoproteins, chemotherapy, and coagulation. With the permission of the authors and publisher, Stem Cells has reproduced the section on apoptosis, which we think our readers will enjoy.

Background: Ovarian cancer (OC), particularly high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC), is the leading cause of mortality from gynecological malignancies worldwide. Despite the initial effectiveness of treatment, acquired resistance to poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPis) represents a major challenge for the clinical management of HGSOC, highlighting the necessity for the development of novel therapeutic strategies. This study investigated the role of 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase 3 (PFKFB3), a pivotal regulator of glycolysis, in PARPi resistance and explored its potential as a therapeutic target to overcome PARPi resistance.

Fluoride (F), as a natural element found in a wide range of sources such as water and certain foods, has been proven to be beneficial in preventing dental caries, but concerns have been raised regarding its potential deleterious effects on overall health. Sodium fluoride (NaF), another form of F, has the ability to accumulate in reproductive organs and interfere with hormonal regulation and oxidative stress pathways, contributing to reproductive toxicity. While the exact mechanisms of F-induced reproductive toxicity are not fully understood, this review aims to elucidate the mechanisms involved in testicular and ovarian injury.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) ranks as the sixth most common malignancy globally. Cisplatin is the standard chemotherapy for OSCC, but resistance often reduces its efficacy, necessitating new treatments with fewer side effects. Rumex dentatus L.

Background: Rex rabbit is famous for its silky and soft fur coat, a characteristic predominantly attributed to its hair follicles. Numerous studies have confirmed the crucial roles of mRNAs and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in regulating key cellular processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis and immunity. However, their involvement in the regulation of the hair cycle in Rex rabbits remains unknown.

Tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) is a common malignant oral cancer characterized by substantial invasion, a high rate of lymph node and distant metastasis, and a high recurrence rate. This study aims to provide new ideas for the diagnosis and treatment of TSCC patients by exploring the related mechanisms that affect the migration and invasion of TSCC and inhibit the migration and spread of cancer cells. The results indicated the rate of high expression of IL-17 in cancer tissues was greater than that in tongue tissues, and the expression of IL-17 was related to the TNM stage.
