We studied the effect of oral contraceptives and smoking on the lipid profile of 251 women and 72 men, 20-29-year-old. In women, taking estroprogestatives, cholesterol, triglycerides, apoproteins AI and B were higher than in controls; HDL-cholesterol was not modified. Lipoprotein analyses in polyacrylamide gradient gel exhibited an increase of the HDL3 fraction at the expense of the HDL2 fraction, with a reduced LDL size. Smoking in addition to estroprogestative absorption accentuated these modifications and led to a decreased HDL-cholesterol (HDL2 fraction essentially), with an increased LDL-cholesterol. In men, smoking resulted in higher levels of total cholesterol, apoprotein B and LDL-cholesterol, without any significant change in LDL size, higher levels of triglycerides and lower level of the HDL2 fraction without any change in HDL-cholesterol. In women, smoking led only to an increase in triglycerides. In summary, analysis of the distribution of HDL subclasses and of LDL size showed an evolution towards a supposed more atherogenic lipid profile in women taking oral contraceptives associated or not with smoking, and in male smokers.

Background: Long-term childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at high risk of having dyslipidemia including low high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). However, little is known about the prevalence of low HDL-C and the impact of therapy exposure on HDL composition early after treatment is terminated.
Methods: This associative study included 50 children and adolescents who had completed their cancer treatments (< 4 years).

The kinetics of free radical peroxidation of different classes of blood plasma lipoproteins (nanoparticles involved in lipid transport in the body) was studied. The susceptibility of atherogenic low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) to the Cu2+-initiated free radical peroxidation in vitro was found to be more than ten times higher than that of antiatherogenic high density lipoproteins (HDLs). The baseline content of acyl hydroperoxy derivatives of phospholipids (primary products of free radical peroxidation) in the outer layer of LDL particles in vivo measured per particle exceeded the baseline content of these compounds in HDL particles by more than an order of magnitude.

This study investigated the associations between the levels of 27 plasma metabolites, 114 lipoprotein parameters, determined using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and the ABO blood groups and the Rhesus (Rh) blood system in a cohort of = 840 Italian healthy blood donors of both sexes. We observed good multivariate discrimination between the metabolomic and lipoproteomic profiles of subjects with positive and negative Rh. In contrast, we did not observe significant discrimination for the ABO blood group pairwise comparisons, suggesting only slight metabolic differences between these group-specific metabolic profiles.

The efficiency of cholesterol efflux from cells promoted by high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) depends on HDL concentration and functional properties. The term "dysfunctional HDL" describes HDLs with impaired protective properties.
