Free-radical lipid oxidation was studied in the cerebral cortex, striatum, hippocampus, and hypothalamus of KHA and KLA rats (Koltushi High and Low Avoidance) during the development of post-stress depression. After unavoidable emotional-pain exposure, changes in the free-radical oxidation of lipids were phasic in nature and had a clear structural specificity in the early phases. During the maximum development of depression, the most marked impairments to lipid peroxidation were seen in KHA rats in the striatum and hippocampus, while the greatest changes in KLA rats were seen in the striatum and hypothalamus.

The aim of this investigation was to study the distribution and structural organization of rat hippocampal astrocytes containing immunoreactive glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) after ischemic damage of the brain in the animals treated with intraventricular infusion of creatine as a neuroprotective drug, and in those which received no treatment. Using the methods of light microscopy and immunocytochemistry, the brain of 26 mature Sprague-Dawley (Koltushi) rats was studied. Some animals were narcotized and subjected to general brain ischemia (lasting for 12 min) followed by a reperfusion (for 7 days).

The scientific adventure of the Ivan Pavlov Department of Physiology is traced from Pavlov's and his students pioneer work on "psychic salivation" to the times of the Biological Station at Koltushi. The development of the Department after Pavlov's death is described and the research trends of the three present laboratories (Neurobiology of Integrative Brain Functions, Psychophysiology of Emotions, and Neurodynamic Correction of Psycho Neurological Pathology) are discussed.
