Published: October 1999

Injuries to branches of the superior mesenteric artery are unusual and often difficult to diagnose, yet require prompt recognition and treatment to prevent exsanguinating hemorrhage or bowel ischemia. This report describes a unique case of an ileocolic artery pseudoaneurysm diagnosed using delayed CT imaging and definitively treated by transcatheter embolization. Cathet. Cardiovasc. Medical trauma is a profound concern for those with chronic conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), especially young adults. This trauma, arising from both the disease itself and necessary medical interventions, manifests as an accumulation of traumatic experiences impacting a patient's physical and psychological well-being. Division of Respiratory, Critical Care, and Occupational Pulmonary Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Utah School of Medicine, Salt Lake City, UT.

Chylothorax, which accounts for 1% to 3% of pleural effusions, typically results from either surgery (traumatic) or underlying malignancy (nontraumatic). Less common causes of nontraumatic chylothorax are numerous and include congenital lymphatic abnormalities, connective tissue diseases, cirrhosis, and infection, among others. We describe what appears to be the first reported case of chylothorax caused by chylous ascites in Crohn disease.

This study aimed to examine the association between IBD and the risk of incident psychiatric disorders and investigate whether and how blood biomarkers mediate this association.

Methods: This prospective cohort study using data from the UK Biobank included participants without psychiatric diagnoses at baseline.

Psychosocial factors play an important role in the disease course and illness experience of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Consultation with a health psychologist is an important component of care for many IBD patients and provides an opportunity to identify areas of psychosocial concern, recognize coping deficits and strengths, and facilitate treatment recommendations. Psychosocial assessment in IBD requires a nuanced approach that goes beyond general mental health screening and considers the disease-specific concerns that impact patients.
