/ Over the last decade, forest management planning has shifted its focus from a production-oriented approach to an ecosystem-based approach. Forest landscape management has thus emerged as a new challenge to forest managers. In this paper we examine the evolutionary process of forest management leading to landscape management and compares and contrasts its concept and principles to its predecessor, the conventional forest resource management approach. It explains the conceptual framework, provides the principles and the improvements over conventional management planning, and discusses different design approaches towards the landscape management concept. However, the paper points out that the evolutionary process of forest management provides sustainable healthy forest ecosystems. Smarter use of information technology, such as geographic information systems and remote sensing, a comprehensive digital spatial database, better understanding of spatial forest ecosystem dynamics across spatial and temporal scales, effective public involvement, better decision-making tools, and development of workable management strategies towards sustainability are prerequisite to make the realization of holistic management approach on the ground happen.KEY WORDS: Forest landscape management; Holistic approach; Spatial structurehttp://link.springer-ny.com/link/service/journals/00267/bibs/24n4p437.html

Understanding the association between urban noise and nighttime light in China.

Sci Rep

School of Architecture and Urban-Rural Planning, Fuzhou University, Fuzhou, 350108, China.

Nighttime light data partially reflects the process of urban modernization and its reaction to urban scale, but its correlation with noise remains unclear, especially over a long-term time series, remains unclear. To address this gap, we examine 31 provincial capital cities and municipalities in China as the study area, utilizing noise monitoring data and nighttime light data to explore their relationship in urban areas from 2012 to 2021. The results show that: (1) During the study period, the regional environmental noise and night light index of 31 major cities exhibited a consistent upward trend, with the average equivalent sound level of environmental noise in most urban areas fluctuating between 50.

IUPHAR Themed Review: The Gut Microbiome in Schizophrenia.

UniSA Clinical & Health Sciences, University of South Australia, Adelaide, South Australia 5000, Australia. Electronic address:

Gut microbial dysbiosis or altered gut microbial consortium, in schizophrenia suggests a pathogenic role through the gut-brain axis, influencing neuroinflammatory and neurotransmitter pathways critical to psychotic, affective, and cognitive symptoms. Paradoxically, conventional psychotropic interventions may exacerbate this dysbiosis, with antipsychotics, particularly olanzapine, demonstrating profound effects on microbial architecture through disruption of bacterial phyla ratios, diminished taxonomic diversity, and attenuated short-chain fatty acid synthesis. To address these challenges, novel therapeutic strategies targeting the gut microbiome, encompassing probiotic supplementation, prebiotic compounds, faecal microbiota transplantation, and rationalised co-pharmacotherapy, show promise in attenuating antipsychotic-induced metabolic disruptions while enhancing therapeutic efficacy.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a sophisticated diagnostic tool that utilizes the magnetic properties of biological tissue to generate detailed images of internal structures without the use of ionizing radiation. Despite its benefits in providing high-contrast images of soft tissues, the strong magnetic fields used in MRI present a unique safety challenge. Increasing MRI-related accidents and the prevalence of patients with metallic implants in recent years underscore the critical need for stringent MR safety protocols.

At-risk conifer stands growing in hot, arid conditions at low elevations may contain the most climate change-adapted seeds needed for sustainable forestry. This study used a triage framework to identify high-priority survey areas for Pinus ponderosa (Pipo) within a large region, by intersecting an updated range map with a map of seed zones and elevation bands (SZEBs). The framework assesses place-based climate change and potential wildfire risks by rank-order across 740 potential collection units.
