Impact of muscle fatigue on anticipatory postural adjustments during gait initiation.

Front Physiol

January 2025

Human Physiology Section of the Department of Pathophysiology and Transplantation, Università Degli Studi, Milano, Italy.

Introduction: Prolonged or strenuous exercise leads to a temporary decrease in muscle function and performance, which interferes with activity of both prime movers and postural muscles. This effect of fatigue has been reported both for single segment movements and for locomotion. However, little is known regarding the effects of fatigue on anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) during gait initiation, a task in which the control of focal movement should be strictly coupled to a feedforward control of posture.

Microfluidic-Enabled Self-Directed Hydrogel Microspheres for Multiplexed MicroRNA Assays.

Anal Chem

January 2025

MOE Key Laboratory of Geriatric Nutrition and Health, Department of Bioengineering, Beijing Technology and Business University, Beijing 100048, China.

Multiplexed microRNA (miRNA) detection has proven valuable in disease diagnosis; yet, the development of advanced tools for their analysis remains a subject of broad interest. Here, we propose a novel single-particle method for multiplexed miRNA detection using self-directed hydrogel microspheres, which feature supersegmented compartments for loading analyte probes and an air-encapsulated region that grants the microsphere a unique preferred posture in aqueous solutions. By exploiting microfluidic technology, we can widely adjust the size of the microspheres and the number of compartments can be widely adjusted.

Introduction: In space, under weightlessness conditions, human brain activity is changed due to the shifting of body fluid and blood toward the cephalic region. This shifting leads to changes in cerebral hemodynamics and, consequently, neurophysiological function, which impacts mental functions like cognition and decision-making capabilities of space travelers. The present study reports the effect of acute exposure to simulated microgravity on cognitive functions and event-related potentials.

EXPRESS: Activation of the Motor System Following Gaze Cues is Determined by Hand Access, Not Hand Proximity.

Q J Exp Psychol (Hove)

January 2025

Centre for Motor Control, Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The influence of gaze cues on target prioritization (reaction times (RTs)) and movement execution (movement trajectories) differs based on the ability of the human gaze cue model to manually interact with the targets. Whereas gaze cues consistently impacted RTs, movement trajectories may only be affected when the hands of the human model had the potential to interact with the target. However, the perceived ability to interact with the targets was confounded by the proximity between the model's hands and the targets.

Predicting lower body joint moments and electromyography signals using ground reaction forces during walking and running: An artificial neural network approach.

Gait Posture

January 2025

Department of Biomechanics and Center for Research in Human Movement Variability, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Omaha, NE 68182, USA; Department of Surgery and Research Service, Nebraska-Western Iowa Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Omaha, NE 68105, USA. Electronic address:

Background: This study leverages Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to predict lower limb joint moments and electromyography (EMG) signals from Ground Reaction Forces (GRF), providing a novel perspective on human gait analysis. This approach aims to enhance the accessibility and affordability of biomechanical assessments using GRF data, thus eliminating the need for costly motion capture systems.

Research Question: Can ANNs use GRF data to accurately predict joint moments in the lower limbs and EMG signals?

Methods: We employed ANNs to analyze GRF data and to use them to predict joint moments (363-trials; 4-datasets) and EMG signals (63-trials; 2-datasets).
