Use of monoclonal antibodies for the diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer.

Hybridoma

Department of Biochemistry, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London, United Kingdom.

Published: June 1999

Although the management of cancer by exploiting properties distinguishing neoplastic and normal cells has always been an attractive concept, it was the development of hybridoma technology and the resulting tumor-associated monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) that offered new prospects for this strategy. Twenty years later, some of the applications of MAbs in oncology are now part of the everyday diagnosis and treatment, while others are the subject of intensive investigation. We reviewed the current applications of MAbs in the diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer and attempted to put the issue into perspective, with particular presentation of their therapeutic potential.

Background: Due to the heterogeneity of literature findings, stent type selection for the endovascular treatment of complex aorto-iliac occlusive disease remains challenging. The BELSTREAM study, a physician-initiated, prospective, multicenter, single-arm study, aims to report the safety and efficacy of the balloon expandable LifeStream Peripheral Stent Graft System (BD, Tempe, Arizona, USA) for the treatment of complex TASC C and D aorto-iliac artery lesions.

Methods: Seventy patients and 133 lesions were included at six Belgian institutions.

Optimizing the life of vascular access during follow-up.

J Cardiovasc Surg (Torino)

February 2025

Department of Vascular Surgery, ASST Settelaghi Universitary Teaching Hospital, University of Insubria, Varese, Italy.

Optimizing the longevity of vascular access in hemodialysis patients remains a critical aspect of patient care, given the significant role of arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) and arteriovenous grafts (AVGs) in enabling effective dialysis. Vascular access complications, such as stenosis, thrombosis, and cannulation-related damage, continue to challenge both the functionality and the sustainability of these access points. Recent advancements underscore the importance of a robust follow-up strategy, integrating clinical evaluations with diagnostic tools like color Doppler ultrasound (CDU) and emerging interventional approaches such as drug-coated balloon (DCB) angioplasty.

Objectives: Cutaneous adnexal carcinomas (CACs) are rare skin cancers with no established treatment guidelines. Given the limited data, this study aims to explore the characteristics and outcomes of patients with CAC treated with radiation therapy (RT).

Methods: Patients diagnosed with CAC between 2000 and 2020 who received RT were included.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is one of the most prevalent viral infections worldwide. In general, host immunity is sufficient to clear viral shedding and recurrences, although it is insufficient to prevent subsequent virologic reactivations. In immunocompromised patients, prolonged and difficult-to-treat HSV infections may develop.

Citrate in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: biomarker or therapeutic agent?

Curr Opin Nephrol Hypertens

March 2025

Nephrology Division, Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), São Paulo, Brazil.

Purpose Of Review: This review highlights the latest findings regarding hypocitraturia in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), from both experimental and clinical studies, exploring the underlying pathophysiology and potential therapeutic approach.

Recent Findings: Experimental studies have shown that the lodging of microcrystals in the tubules can trigger cyst formation and growth in polycystic kidney disease (PKD). ADPKD patients are prone to developing hypocitraturia in early stages, which could predispose to calcium microcrystal formation.
