A fraction isolated from the gorgonian Rumphella aggregata (Plexauridae) was studied vitro on asynchronous cells of a human non-small-cell-bronchopulmonary-carcinoma line (NSCLC-N6). Cell growth appeared to be inhibited in the Gl phase of the cell cycle, and kinetic studies in pretreated cells showed that this growth arrest was irreversible. These events seem to show a terminal maturation induced by this new product.

Recently, coral-associated microorganisms have attracted widespread attention, and most of these studies have focused on stony and soft corals. However, our knowledge of the diversity and bioactivity of microorganisms in gorgonian corals is still limited. In this study, the biodiversity of microbes in two gorgonian corals (Leptogorgia rigida and Menella kanisa) from the South China Sea was investigated by combining traditional culture method with molecular biology technique (bacterial 16S or fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rRNA gene sequences).

Kallopterolides A-I (-), a family of nine diterpenoids possessing either a cleaved pseudopterane or a severed cembrane skeleton, along with several known compounds were isolated from the Caribbean Sea plume . The structures and relative configurations of - were characterized by analysis of HR-MS, IR, UV, and NMR spectroscopic data in addition to computational methods and side-by-side comparisons with published NMR data of related congeners. An investigation was conducted as to the potential of the kallopterolides as plausible in vitro anti-inflammatory, antiprotozoal, and antituberculosis agents.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition primarily driven by T helper 2 (Th2) cytokines, resulting in skin barrier defects, angiogenesis, and inflammatory responses. The marine natural product excavatolide B (EXCB), isolated from the Formosan Gorgonian coral Briareum stechei, exhibits anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. To enhance solubility, EXCB is chemically modified into the derivatives EXCB-61 salt and EXCB-79.

The archipelagic country of Indonesia is populated by the densest marine biodiversity in the world which has created strong global interest and is valued by both Indigenous and European settlements for different purposes. Nearly 1000 chemicals have been extracted and identified. In this review, a systematic data curation was employed to collate bioprospecting related manuscripts providing a comprehensive directory based on publications from 1988 to 2022.
