Ultraviolet radiation (UV) was effective in destroying Salmonella typhimurium on agar plates and poultry skin. Agar plates inoculated with varying numbers of colony-forming units (CFU) of S. typhimurium (1.2 x 10(2) to 1.7 x 10(9) were subjected to different doses of UV light to determine optimal killing. Poultry skin was also inoculated with varying CFU of S. typhimurium per 2 cm2 of skin and subjected to UV light. UV light treatment of inoculated agar plates revealed almost complete elimination (99.9%) of S. typhimurium at 2,000 microW x s x cm(-2). Bacterial reduction was less effective on the surface of poultry skin when a 80.5% reduction in S. typhimurium was obtained at 2,000 microW x s x cm(-2).

The additive is already authorised as sensory feed additive for use in feed for chickens for fattening, minor poultry species for fattening, laying poultry, poultry reared for laying, ornamental fish, ornamental birds and ornamental breeder hens. The Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) concludes that canthaxanthin produced with CBS 146148 is considered safe for the target species, the consumer and the environment under the current authorised conditions of use.

The applicant subsequently proposed a new method of analyses, incorporating a tracer in the composition of a premix, which has been evaluated by EURL and recommended as official method for the quantification of the organic chromium content in premixtures and feedingstuffs. In view of the above, the Commission asked EFSA to issue a new opinion on the safety and efficacy of chromium proprionate (KemTRACE™ Chromium) as feed additive for all growing poultry species including the newly submitted information by the applicant that involves the use of the microtracer.

The applicant provided evidence that the additive complies with the conditions of the authorisation. The FEEDAP Panel concluded that the additive in all its formulations remains safe for all poultry species, weaned piglets, pigs for fattening and sows, and remains safe for consumers and the environment.
