Prepausal postvocalic stops in English are reported to occur both with and without audible release bursts, more or less randomly, and this difference is said to be without distinctive function. However, there is evidence that an English final stop, absent its release, may be of reduced intelligibility, particularly as to its place of articulation. Without audible release a final stop's place is conveyed mainly, perhaps entirely, by frequency shifts in the vowel formants. Among the vowels of English some are diphthongal, a property also signaled by formant shifts. The question arises: Is the intelligibility of an unreleased stop significantly affected by the phonetic nature of the vowel? Perceptual testing of appropriately chosen nonsense monosyllables ending in [p(downward left crop mark ) t(downward left crop mark ) k(downward left crop mark )] indicates that these stops are generally somewhat less intelligible after diphthongs. However, not all three stops are affected equally, [k(downward left crop mark )] perception being especially reduced in this context.

The crop system of soybean (summer)-maize (fall/winter) succession has been adopted widely in the Neotropics. It inadvertently provides food to stink bugs between crops, forming "green-bridges," which favor Diceraeus melacanthus (Dallas) outbreaks. Attempts to control these outbreaks, usually occurring at the end of the soybean cycle and the beginning of the maize cycle, were made by spraying insecticides at the time of soybean desiccation in addition to insecticide seed treatment on maize, but apparently it has been insufficient to provide acceptable control.

The revocation of chlorpyrifos tolerances in 2022 left sweetpotato growers without their most important tool to combat a complex of soil-borne root pests that includes wireworms (Coleoptera: Elateridae). Since then, growers have reported increased root damage despite a rapid pivot to pyrethroid-based management systems to replace mechanically incorporated preplant chlorpyrifos broadcast sprays. Our goal was to evaluate the efficacy of alternative insecticide chemistries and application methods to expand the portfolio of management options for wireworms, specifically Conoderus spp.
