A formalised report (FR) offers a set of standard phrases to be used to state (1) whether findings of a cytologic study contain new information; (2) the degree of certainty in understanding the significance of morphological forms of available international classifications of a pathology said morphological evidence is compatible with. The use of that FR provides a means of evaluating reported cytologic conclusions, and comparing them with relevant postmortem diagnosis. This makes it possible to ascertain with greater or less certainty, with which nosological forms a doctor deals. It is also a means of inspection over the way materials are sampled and processed at a particular cytological laboratory as well as evaluation of its general standards. The main advantage of introduction of FR is that it is unambiguous and can be computer processed.

The digital transformation of pathology, through automation and computational tools, addresses current challenges in the field. This study evaluates Paige Pan Cancer, a novel artificial intelligence tool based on the Virchow foundation model, designed to flag invasive cancer in haematoxylin and eosin-stained slides from 16 primary tissue types. Using 62 cases from the Ipatimup Pathology Laboratory, we found the tool had a sensitivity of 93.

Article Synopsis
  • The SERENA-2 trial investigates the efficacy of camizestrant, a new oral selective estrogen receptor degrader, compared to the traditional injectable SERD, fulvestrant, in treating advanced hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in post-menopausal women.
  • This phase 2 trial includes patients who have experienced disease progression after previous endocrine therapies and assesses different dosages of camizestrant against fulvestrant, focusing on progression-free survival rates as the primary outcome.
  • Conducted across 74 centers worldwide, the study also monitors the safety and side effects of the treatments among all participants who received at least one dose.

The reporting of lung neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) according to the 2021 World Health Organisation (WHO) is based on mitotic count per 2 mm, necrosis assessment and a constellation of cytological and immunohistochemical details. Accordingly, typical carcinoid and atypical carcinoid are low- to intermediate-grade neuroendocrine tumours (NETs), while large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) and small-cell lung carcinoma are high-grade NECs. In small-sized diagnostic material (cytology and biopsy), the noncommittal term of carcinoid tumour/NET not otherwise specified (NOS) and metastatic carcinoid NOS have been introduced with regard to primary and metastatic diagnostic settings, respectively.

URINE CYTOLOGY AND AXILLARY TESTING FOR INTERPRETATION AND FOLLOW-UP OF URINARY TUMORS.

Acta Clin Croat

November 2022

Department of Urology, University General Hospital of Heraklion, University of Crete Medical School, Heraklion, Crete, Greece.

Microscopic appearance of cells in urine cytological samples is the formal diagnostic approach adjunct to cystoscopy for the detection and follow-up of urinary tumors. However, cystoscopy is a surgical method and cytology may miss low-grade papillary tumors. Several assays and markers have been developed to assist in this.
