Small Gap Dynamics in High Mountain Central European Spruce Forests-The Role of Standing Dead Trees in Gap Formation.

Plants (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Forest Resource Planning and Informatics, Faculty of Forestry, Technical University in Zvolen, T. G. Masaryka 24, 960 01 Zvolen, Slovak Republic.

Gap dynamics are driving many important processes in the development of temperate forest ecosystems. What remains largely unknown is how often the regeneration processes initialized by endogenous mortality of dominant and co-dominant canopy trees take place. We conducted a study in the high mountain forests of the Central Western Carpathians, naturally dominated by the Norway spruce.

Anatomical Analysis of Bicipital Groove and Its Spur Formation Using 3D-CT: A Retrospective Observational Study.

Life (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Eunpyeong St Mary's Hospital, School of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul 03312, Republic of Korea.

Concomitant long head of biceps (LHB) pathologies commonly occur with rotator cuff tears, but LHB problems are often underestimated. There is a lack of studies on the correlation between bicipital groove morphology and biceps pathology, as well as the significance of bony spurs around the groove. This study analyzed the anatomical parameters of the bicipital groove and spur formation using 3D-CT in 111 patients.

Background: The accurate diagnosis of degenerative joint diseases (DJDs) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) presents a significant clinical challenge due to their progressive nature and the complexity of associated structural changes. These conditions, characterized by cartilage degradation, subchondral bone remodeling, and eventual joint dysfunction, necessitate reliable and efficient imaging techniques for early detection and effective management. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is widely regarded as the gold standard for evaluating osseous changes in the TMJ, offering detailed visualization of bony structures.

This case report and video demonstrate the technique of full-endoscopic J-shaped transforaminal L5 exiting nerve decompression in Bertolotti syndrome. Bertolotti syndrome, characterized by a congenital lumbosacral transitional vertebra, often results in mechanical lower back pain and nerve root compression. A 69-year-old male presented with progressive radiating pain in the right leg and tingling in the L5 dermatome.

Robotically assisted mitral valve repair using the butterfly technique in a patient with a narrow chest.

J Cardiothorac Surg

January 2025

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Sapporo Cardio Vascular Clinic, 8-1, Kita 49 jyo, Higashi 16 jyo, Higashi-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido, 007-0849, Japan.

Background: Minimally invasive cardiac surgery for mitral regurgitation is challenging in patients with narrow chests due to limited thoracic space. The butterfly technique can prevent systolic anterior motion in patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation and redundant posterior leaflets, but it is difficult to perform via minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Few reports have described mitral valve repair using the butterfly technique or in a narrow chest.
