Degenerative-dystrophic disorders threatening the vision may occur in the cornea, in the lens, in the vitreous body, in the retina and in the optic nerve. Corneal degenerative disorders are rare and mainly of hereditary origin. Keratoplasty is a successful therapeutical method. The surgical treatment of cataract is one of the most fruitful field of ophthalmic surgeons even if the development of cataracts is not in every relations understood. Degenerative disorders of the retina are not subjects of successful treatment, though some new therapeutical modalities are promising. Retinal pigmentepithelium-, and neuroepithelium-transplantation and other surgical procedures in age-related macular degeneration are new approaches in previously applied medical treatment modalities. From clinical point of view degenerative disorders of the retina have the most significance as they occur in elderly and have severe social consequences as well. Excessive degenerative myopia may be reduced in selected cases by surgical approaches. Through encouraging results of experimental and clinical research new therapeutical methods were introduced in the everyday praxis, knowledge some of these new methods are worthy for physicians outside the field of ophthalmology as well.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a degenerative neurological disorder defined by the formation of β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles within the brain. Current pharmacological treatments for AD only provide symptomatic relief, and there is a lack of definitive disease-modifying therapies. Chemical chaperones, such as 4-Phenylbutyric acid (4PBA) and Tauroursodeoxycholic acid, have shown neuroprotective effects in animal and cell culture models.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative bone and joint disease with an unclear pathogenesis. Our study identified that the histone acetyltransferase encoded by Kat7 is upregulated in the affected articular cartilage of OA patients and in a mice model of medial meniscal instability-induced OA. Chondrocyte-specific knockdown of Kat7 expression exhibited a protective effect on articular cartilage integrity.

Purpose: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a prevalent degenerative bone and joint disease observed in clinical practice. While acupuncture has demonstrated efficacy in treating KOA, the central mechanisms underlying its effects remain ambiguous. Recently, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been extensively applied in studying the brain mechanisms of acupuncture analgesia.

Purpose: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a complication of diabetes and a primary cause of visual impairment amongst working-age individuals. DR is a degenerative condition in which hyperglycaemia results in morphological and functional changes in certain retinal cells. Existing treatments mainly address the advanced stages of the disease, which involve vascular defects or neovascularization.

Introduction: Endolymphatic sac tumor (ELST) is a rare neoplasm that exhibits aggressive growth primarily in the endolymphatic capsule and can potentially affect nearby neurovascular structures. The diagnosis of ELST poses challenges due to its low prevalence, gradual progression, and nonspecific symptomatology. It is currently believed that prompt surgical intervention is recommended for endolymphatic sac tumors upon diagnosis.
