Center for Biomedical Semantics and Data Intelligence (CBSDI), University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Houston, TX, USA.
Background: Findings regarding the protective effect of Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) against Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and cognitive decline have been inconclusive.
Method: A total of 6,390,826 hypertensive individuals were included in this study from Optum's de-identified Clinformatics® Data Mart. We identified antihypertensive medication (AHM) drug classes and subclassified ARBs by blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability.

Background: Caregiving for older adults requires balancing multiple tasks ranging in complexity and demand. While often characterized as burdensome, there are also positive outcomes related to caregiving including potential benefits to health outcomes. Although older adults are themselves often caregivers, the association between caregiving and cognitive outcomes has not been routinely studied.

Background: Loneliness, dementia, and mortality are interconnected. Thus, understanding the pathways, along with their potential interaction provides a relevant area of research to be developed.
Method: The study tested bi-directional relationships between dementia, loneliness and mortality, while examining both interactions and mediating effects in a large sample of older US adults participating in the nationally representative Health and Retirement Study.

Background: The overuse of antipsychotics in persons with dementia in long-term care (LTC) has been a source of clinical concern, public attention, and policy intervention for over 30 years. Targeted quality improvement, broader awareness of risks, and other initiatives have resulted in substantial reductions in antipsychotic use in LTC settings in North America and elsewhere. Limited evidence suggests that reductions in antipsychotic use may be resulting in unintended consequences, such as substitution with alternate, but similarly harmful, psychotropic medications.

Background: Personality traits, especially neuroticism, can influence susceptibility to dementia. Although social contact can mitigate stress and risk of dementia, the extent to which social contact can mitigate excess risk associated with neuroticism remains unclear. The objective of study was to investigate changes in neuroticism-associated excess risk of dementia arising from different levels of social contact.
