A heterotrophic bacterial strain TL1T capable of aerobic denitrification was previously enriched in continuous culture from a landfill leachate treatment plant and isolated as a pure culture. The taxonomic position of this isolate within the beta-subclass of the Proteobacteria was determined by 16S rDNA sequence analysis and by conventional taxonomy including substrate spectrum, quinone type (ubiquinone Q-8) and cellular fatty acid composition. Detection of the specific polyamine 2-hydroxyputrescine supports the membership of strain TL1T in the beta-subclass of the Proteobacteria. The results of 16S rDNA sequencing showed that the strain clustered with, but was separate from, Thauera aromatica and Thauera selenatis. DNA-DNA hybridization experiments indicated that the new isolate represents a new species of the genus, for which the name Thauera mechernichensis is proposed; the type strain is DSM 12266T.

Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is a fully biodegradable bioplastic. To foster a circular economy, the integration of PHA production into wastewater treatment facilities can be accomplished using mixed microbial consortia. The effectiveness of this approach relies greatly on the enrichment of PHA-accumulating microorganisms.

Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is a biopolymer that can be used as a bioplastic, offering a green alternative to petroleum-based plastics. In this study, we investigated PHA production using Thauera mechernichensis TL1. The optimal molar C/N ratio was determined to be 20 from among the ratios of 4, 20, 40, 80, and 200 and in the absence of nitrogen.

A Gram-stain-negative, non-endospore-producing, short-rod strain, KNDSS-Mac4, was isolated from a downstream sediment sample of the river Ganges, Kanpur, India and studied by using the polyphasic taxonomic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis uncovered that the strain had similarity to species of the genus Thauera and formed a distinct phylogenetic cluster with Thauera humireducens KACC16524. However, KNDSS-Mac4 showed closest phylogenetic affiliation to Thauera aminoaromatica DSM 14742 with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 98.

The ability of a nitrifying sludge to oxidize p-cresol was evaluated in a sequential batch reactor (SBR). p-Cresol was first transformed to p-hydroxybenzaldehyde and p-hydroxybenzoate, which were later mineralized. The specific rates of p-cresol consumption increased throughout the cycles.

A two-stage aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR) system for treating acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resin wastewater was carried out in this study to evaluate the system performance on nitrification. The results showed that nitrification of the aerobic MBR system was significant and the highest TKN removal of approximately 90% was obtained at hydraulic retention time (HRT) 18 h. In addition, the result of nitrogen mass balance revealed that the percentage of TN removal due to denitrification was in the range of 8.
