The target of rapamycin (TOR) is a central hub kinase that promotes growth and development in all eukaryote cells. TOR induces protein synthesis through the phosphorylation of the S6 kinase (S6K), which, in turn, phosphorylates ribosomal S6 protein (RPS6) increasing this anabolic process. Therefore, S6K and RPS6 phosphorylation are generally used as readouts of TOR activity.

Dinoflagellate birefringent chromosomes (BfCs) contain some of the largest known genomes, yet they lack typical nucleosomal micrococcal-nuclease protection patterns despite containing variant core histones. One BfC end interacts with extranuclear mitotic microtubules at the nuclear envelope (NE), which remains intact throughout the cell cycle. Ultrastructural studies, polarized light and fluorescence microscopy, and micrococcal nuclease-resistant profiles (MNRPs) revealed that NE-associated chromosome ends persisted post-mitosis.

The process of keratinization and cornification in the developing beak has been studied through immunofluorescence and immunogold electron microscopy in chick and zebrafinch embryos. After the curved beak anlagen appears at the tip of the maxillar bone, 5-8 layers of embryonic epidermis are generated from the basal layer of the epidermis. These cells are weakly immunoabeled for IFKs (Intermediate Filament Keratins) and more intensely for scaffoldin, a protein of the EDC (Epidermal Differentiation Complex) involved in the soft keratinization of the embryonic epidermis.

Great interest exists in developing a transgenic trait that controls the economically important soybean () pest, soybean cyst nematode (SCN, ), due to its adaptation to native resistance. Soybean plants expressing the delta-endotoxin, Cry14Ab, were recently demonstrated to control SCN in both growth chamber and field testing. In that communication, ingestion of the Cry14Ab toxin by SCN second stage juveniles (J2s) was demonstrated using fluorescently labeled Cry14Ab in an in vitro assay.

Nuclear speckles are compartments enriched in splicing factors present in the nucleoplasm of eucaryote cells. Speckles have been studied in mammalian culture and tissue cells, as well as in some non-mammalian vertebrate cells and invertebrate oocytes. In mammals, their morphology is linked to the transcriptional and splicing activities of the cell through a recruitment mechanism.
