Fingerprint patterns (or epidermal ridges) are by far one of the most reliable techniques for individual identification. Fingerprint patterns get deposited on all kinds of solid surfaces due to human transudation or exudation process. Bodily fluids through sweat glands contain moisture, natural oils and proteins.

Fingermark impressions in blood are commonly encountered at violent crime scenes and represent a critical trace that can link an individual to the scene. A range of techniques are available for detecting and enhancing bloody impressions; however, many chemical methods involve using hazardous solvents or require alternative light sources to visualise fluorescence. This is particularly challenging for bloody impressions on dark substrates.

The use of protein stains to enhance fingermark ridge detail in blood is a common technique used by forensic practitioners around the world. Amido Black is one of the most favoured protein stains due to its strong staining ability. The most common formulation of Amido Black is methanol based, with an ability to simultaneously fix and stain the blood impression, however methanol is toxic and can disrupt some surfaces, potentially compromising fingermark detail.

Introduction: breast cancer development is linked to mutant single nucleotide polymorphism of breast cancer type 1 (BRCA1) gene usually harboured within exon 11. It has also been linked to finger dermatoglyphics where certain patterns have been associated with breast cancer. This study suggests a possible relationship between finger dermatoglyphic patterns and single nucleotide polymorphism of BRCA1 gene.

Reflecting on the difficulty of finding the evidence of latent fingerprints on wet and rough surfaces, scientists need to visualise those fingermarks without any background interference and stable adhesion of visualising material over the fingermark residues. To stabilize the interaction with the fingermarks, the synthesized nanoparticles were conjugated with a highly adhesive biopolymer, Mussel Adhesive Protein (MAP) which can effectively interact with fingerprint deposits. Rare earth metal, europium oxide and nanoparticles were used as a visualisation material to get high contrast and reduced background interference-based fingerprints.
