Article Abstract

We first carried out microscopic observation of the intramural nerves of a bullfrog gallbladder which were fixed and stained with a solution of OsO4 and ZnI2. We then investigated if the responses of isolated frog gallbladder evoked by electrical stimulation are mediated through the intramural nerves. The following results were obtained: 1. The nerve plexus and the perivascular nerves were observed in the subserosal layer of the wall of the gallbladder. These nerves do not have a ganglia. That is to say, no ganglionated plexus or ganglia were observed in the subserosal layer of the wall of the gallbladder. 2. Electrical stimulation caused the gallbladders to contraction with rectangular pulses (50 volt, 40 Hz) of durations of 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 msec for a period of 10 sec. Three blockers of nerve mediated responses, atropine (1 x 10(-6) M), guanethidine (1 x 10(-6) M) and tetrodotoxin (3 x 10(-7) M), had no effect on the gallbladder contractions induced by stimulation with pulses as short as 0.5 msec or as long as 5 msec. These results suggest that the bullfrog gallbladder may not contain nerves related to movement. Thus, the contraction of the bullfrog gallbladder induced by electrical stimulation does not seem to be modulated by extrinsic nerve terminals distributed in the gallbladder wall.

We investigated the interaction of 2,4,6-triiodophenol (TIP), a potent thyroid hormone disrupting chemical, with serum proteins from rainbow trout (Onchorhynchus mykiss), bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana), chicken (Gallus gallus), pig (Sus scrofa domesticus), and rat (Rattus norvegicus) using a [(125)I]TIP binding assay, gel filtration chromatography, and native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. [(125)I]TIP bound non-specifically to proteins in trout serum, specifically but weakly to proteins in bullfrog serum, and specifically and strongly to proteins in chicken, pig, and rat serum samples. Candidate TIP-binding proteins included lipoproteins (220-320kDa) in trout, albumin in bullfrog, albumin and transthyretin (TTR) in chicken and pig, and TTR in rat.

During March 2001-April 2004, 164 adult anurans of 6 species (47 Rana blairi, 35 Rana catesbeiana, 31 Hyla chrysoscelis, 31 Pseudacris triseriata triseriata, 11 Bufo woodhousii, and 9 Acris crepitans blanchardi) from Pawnee Lake, Lancaster County, Nebraska, were surveyed for myxozoan parasites. The branching and distribution patterns of the superior mesenteric artery were studied in 10 adult bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) after injection of coloured latex solution into the vasculature. The abdominal digestive organs in the bullfrog were mainly supplied by the coeliac artery and the superior mesenteric artery, both of which arose as a common trunk, the coeliacomesenteric artery, from the abdominal aorta. The coeliac artery supplied the stomach, liver, gallbladder and the pancreas, whereas the first branch of the superior mesenteric artery was the splenic artery with other branches supplying the greater part of intestine.
