The high costs of bioassays for carcinogenicity in rodents have sparked interest in the use of non-mammalian species as possible alternatives. Invertebrate and lower vertebrate species have been used for many years in bioassays for teratogenicity, toxicity and carcinogenicity involving exposure to a range of genotoxic compounds. Carcinogenicity tests have shown that the development of neoplasia in non-mammalian species is predictable and reproducible and that the results are affected by species, age, chemical class and dose. One disadvantage of using these species in cancer bioassays is the absence of tissues of critical importance in human cancer, such as prostate, lung and breast; however, the similarities between mammals and lower species in basic cellular responses to carcinogens allow reliable correlation of many mechanisms of cancer development down the phylogenetic tree.

Dietary preferences of extant reptiles can be directly observed, whereas diet reconstruction of extinct species typically relies on morphological or dental features. More specific information about the ingested diet is contained in the chemistry of hard tissues. Stable isotopes of calcium and strontium show systematic fractionations between diet and skeletal bioapatite, which is applied for diet and trophic-level reconstructions of extant and extinct vertebrate species.

Heavy chain-only antibodies have found many applications where conventional heavy-light heterodimeric antibodies are not favorable. Heavy chain-only antibodies with their single antigen-binding domain offer the advantage of a smaller size and higher stability relative to conventional antibodies, and thus, the potential for novel targeting modalities. Domain antibodies have commonly been sourced from camelids with humanization or transgenic rodents expressing heavy chains without light chains, but these host species are all mammalian, limiting their capacity to elicit robust immune responses to conserved mammalian targets.
