Background: Biological processes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is crucial for recovery. However, alterations in the of synovial fluid cell population during the acute phase following ACLR and the relationship between these cells and postoperative pain is unclear. The goal of this study was to reveal alterations in synovial fluid cell population during the acute phase following ACLR and relationship between postoperative pain and proportion of synovial fluid cells.

Can eosinophils in adipose tissue add fuel to the fire?

Immunol Cell Biol

January 2021

Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Mayo Clinic Arizona, Scottsdale, AZ, USA.

In inguinal adipose tissue, beige adipocytes are interspersed among white adipocytes and in close communication with dynamic populations of immune cells. Recent data have demonstrated that anti-inflammatory macrophages (M2) increase thermogenic activity of beige adipocytes, although the mechanism is currently under debate. ILC2, cells via secretion, of methionine enkephalin peptide were found to be able to increase beige thermogenesis.

Background: The Northern pike, Esox lucius, is a large, long-lived, top-predator fish species and occupies a broad range of aquatic environments. This species is on its way to becoming an important model organism and has the potential to contribute new knowledge and a better understanding of ecology and evolutionary biology. Very few studies have been done on the intestinal pathology of pike infected with helminths.

Article Synopsis
  • Obesity is a complex disease influenced by genetic and environmental factors, with immune cells like ILC2s playing a critical role in metabolic regulation and dysregulation in obese individuals.
  • Recent research identified ILC2s in human white adipose tissue (WAT) and established that a decrease in ILC2 activity is linked to obesity in both humans and mice.
  • The interleukin-33 (IL-33) protein is essential for maintaining ILC2s and promoting "beiging" of adipose tissue, which enhances calorie burning, while ILC2s release enkephalin peptides that further support this fat transformation process.

Endogenous opioids in wound-site neutrophils of sternotomy patients.

PLoS One

May 2013

Comprehensive Wound Center and Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute, Department of Anesthesiology, Wexner Medical Center at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, United States of America.

Background: Postoperative pain management is a critical aspect of patient care. The inflammatory state of the post-sternotomy surgical wound sensitizes nerve endings, causing pain. Unrelieved or improperly managed pain compromises wound healing.
