Acute phase proteins such as serum amyloid A, haptoglobin, and alpha 1-acid glycoprotein have been identified as markers of inflammation in cattle because they are produced by the liver in response to pro-inflammatory cytokines. This study was designed to assess whether they could be used to discriminate between acute and chronic inflammation. Their concentrations were measured in serum samples from 81 cattle in which inflammation was classified by thorough clinical examination, supported by postmortem findings, as being acute in severity in 31 and chronic in 50. The classical haematological markers of inflammation were also determined in blood from the animals. Serum amyloid A had a maximum (100 per cent) clinical sensitivity in discriminating between the acute and chronic cases, and haptoglobin had the highest clinical specificity of 76 per cent; counts of neutrophils and band neutrophils had sensitivities of 71 per cent and 42 per cent and specificities of 30 per cent and 72 per cent, respectively. It was concluded that serum amyloid A and haptoglobin may be used to discriminate between acute and chronic inflammatory conditions.

Introduction: Acute kidney injury involves inflammation and intrinsic renal damage, and is a common complication of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Baseline chronic kidney disease (CKD) confers an increased mortality risk. We determined the renal long-term outcomes of COVID-19 in patients with baseline CKD, and the risk factors prompting renal replacement therapy (RRT) initiation and mortality.

The Role of Imaging in Pulmonary Vascular Disease: The Clinician's Perspective.

Pulmonary vascular diseases, particularly when accompanied by pulmonary hypertension, are complex disorders often requiring multimodal imaging for diagnosis and monitoring. Echocardiography is the primary screening tool for pulmonary hypertension, while cardiac MR imaging (CMR) is used for more detailed characterization and risk stratification in right ventricular failure. Chest computed tomography (CT) is used to detect vascular anomalies and parenchymal lung diseases.

Endovascular intervention is a safe, effective treatment modality in the management of diverse pulmonary vascular pathologies, including acute or chronic thromboembolic disease, pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (pAVMs), pulmonary artery or bronchial artery hemorrhage, and foreign body retrieval. This article reviews indications, contraindications, techniques, and outcomes in endovascular management of common pulmonary vascular pathologies, with the goal of improving operator familiarity and facility with these procedures.

Imaging of Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension.

Radiol Clin North Am

March 2025

Department of Radiology, University of California San Diego, La Jolla, CA, USA. Electronic address:

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is pulmonary hypertension secondary to chronic obstruction of pulmonary arteries by organized thromboemboli. Echocardiography and Echocardiography and ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) scan are the initial screening examinations for CTEPH; the diagnosis is often missed on computed tomography (CT). Imaging findings of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary disease overlap with those of acute pulmonary embolism, and radiologists should evaluate for the presence of concurrent chronic disease in all cases of acute pulmonary embolism detected on CT pulmonary angiography.

Acute on chronic stress fracture after a medial malleolar osteotomy following osteochondral lesion of the talus treatment.

BMJ Case Rep

January 2025

Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, Amsterdam UMC Location AMC, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

A patient in his 40s presented at the outpatient clinic with sudden pain and swelling over his medial malleolus, 16 weeks after he had undergone osteoperiosteal autografting with a medial malleolar osteotomy for his tertiary osteochondral lesion of the talus. Postoperatively, the patient was treated using the regular evidence-based rehabilitation protocol of 5 weeks of non-weight-bearing and 5 weeks of partial weight-bearing. However, after the confirmed radiological union the patient experienced an acute on chronic stress fracture through the osteotomy line.
