Sedentism is an adaptive alternative in human societies which is often associated with the emergence of complex societies in the Holocene. To elucidate the factors and processes of the emergence of sedentary societies, continuous accumulation of case studies based on robust evidence from across the world is required. Given abundant archaeological and geological evidence from the late Pleistocene to early Holocene, Tanegashima Island, situated in the southern Japanese Archipelago of the northwestern Pacific Rim, has significant potential to unravel factors and processes of sedentism.

Slab windows represent regions within the mantle that are largely devoid of slab material, facilitating direct communication between the mantle above and below the subducting slab. This unprecedented interaction disrupts the conventional material-energy exchange mechanisms between the subducted slab and mantle wedge, giving rise to anomalous heat flow, distinct magmatism, metamorphism, and geophysical features. Geochemical analyses of samples collected from the southern margin of the Parece-Vela Basin have illuminated the magmatic processes associated with a slab window.

Storage of anthropogenic heat in the oceans is spatially inhomogeneous, impacting regional climates and human societies. Climate models project enhanced heat storage in the mid-latitude North Pacific (MNP) and much weaker storage in the tropical Pacific. However, the observed heat storage during the past half-century shows a more complex pattern, with limited warming in the MNP and enhanced warming in the northwest tropical Pacific.

In this study, we used VHF tags and a Motus automated telemetry array to estimate the length of stay of 385 Western Sandpipers () migrating through two stopover sites in British Columbia, Canada (Tofino and Fraser River Estuary) over the course of seven migration periods (three northward and four southward) from 2018 to 2021. The average length of stay of Western Sandpipers at the Tofino site on the west coast of Vancouver Island varied from 2 to 6 days and was shorter than the length of stay at the Fraser River Estuary, where the average length of stay varied from 4 to 8 days.

Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), a highly migratory pelagic species widely distributed in tropical and subtropical oceanic regions, has consistently ranked third in global fishery landings from 2015 to 2022 and holds substantial economic significance for the coastal fisheries of Pacific Rim countries. Integrating PacBio and Hi-C data, a chromosome-level assembly of its genome was accomplished. This assembly comprises 24 pseudo-chromosomes, yielding a genome size of 827.
