Comparative antimicrobial activity of 3-chloro-2-oxazolidinone (I), 3-chloro-4-methyl-2-oxazolidinone (II), 3-chloro-4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolidinone (III), and N-chlorosuccinimide (IV) was evaluated in aqueous buffers in the absence and presence of 5% horse serum. All four compounds had similar bactericidal activity in the absence of horse serum, but I and III had superior activity relative to IV when serum was present. Compound III was considerably more stable with respect ot loss of positive chlorine and bactericidal activity than I and II when stored in 0.1 M sodium dihydrogen phosphate buffered to pH 7.0 at 40 degrees. Thus, III is potentially the most useful bactericidal agent of those evaluated. The chlorine potentials of I, II, and III, the rate constants for transfer of positive chlorine from I and III to morpholine in aqueous solutions, and the hydrolytic stabilities of I and III with respect to loss of positive chlorine were evaluated. These data, together with previously calculated data for IV, are used to rationalize the observed bactericidal activities.

The Coulomb electric field formed between positive and negative charges always restricts the generation and separation of photo-irradiated electrons and holes, resulting in the limited CO photoreduction performances of catalysts. Herein, the defect engineering and high-entropy strategies are used to regulate the crystallinity of CsNaInCl perovskite materials, thus resulting in an enhanced internal polarization electric field, which overcame the Coulomb electric field and promoting the separation process of charge carriers. Moreover, the CsNa{InPrSmGdTb}Cl with Cl vacancies is prepared using the low-temperature syntheses, which overcame the challenge of extremely high-temperature requirements for high entropy alloy preparation.

Zeolite ion-exchange column system has been suggested as a viable option for the removal of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) from explosives-impacted mining wastewater (EIMWW) in cold regions. The objective of this bench-scale study was to compare the effectiveness of several NaOCl, NaOCl-NaCl and NaCl regeneration solutions on the performance of a zeolite column loaded with a synthetic EIMWW. The NaOCl experiments confirmed that effluent pH, total chlorine level, and free chlorine levels during the chlorine regeneration were positively related, thus indicating that ammonia is oxidized to nitrogen gas accompanied by production of hydrogen ions.

To evaluate the effect of amination on biofilm inhibition against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, representative compounds of two previously described 5-aryl-2-aminoimidazole (5-Ar-2-AI) classes were aminated by installing an amino group at the end of the substituted n-alkyl chain. Amination led to an improvement in activity for one of the two classes, the 2N-substituted 5-Ar-2-AI class. Based on these findings, a more extensive library of 2N-substituted-aminated 5-Ar-2-AIs was synthesized having different n-alkyl and halogen substitutions on the 2N-position and the 4(5)-phenyl ring, respectively.
