Background: Guidelines for asthma management focus on treatment with inhaled corticosteroids and on home recording of peak expiratory flow (PEF). The effect of maintenance treatment with inhaled corticosteroids on PEF variation and its relation to other parameters of disease activity were examined in 102 asthmatic children aged 7-14 years.

Methods: During 20 months of treatment with inhaled salbutamol, with or without inhaled budesonide (600 micrograms daily), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), the dose of histamine required to provoke a fall in FEV1 of more than 20% (PD20), the percentage of symptom free days, and PEF variation were assessed bimonthly. PEF variation was computed as the lowest PEF as a percentage of the highest PEF occurring over 14 days, the usual way of expressing PEF variation in asthma self-management plans. For each patient using inhaled corticosteroids within subject correlation coefficients (rho) were computed of PEF variation to the percentage of symptom free days, FEV1, and PD20.

Results: PEF variation decreased significantly during the first two months of treatment with inhaled corticosteroids and then remained stable. The same pattern was observed for symptoms and FEV1. In contrast, PD20 histamine continued to improve throughout the whole follow up period. In individual patients predominantly positive associations of PEF variation with symptoms, FEV1, and PD20 were found, but the ranges of these associations were wide.

Conclusions: During treatment with inhaled corticosteroids the changes in PEF variation over time show poor concordance with changes in other parameters of asthma severity. When only PEF is monitored, clinically relevant deteriorations in symptoms, FEV1, or PD20 may be missed. This suggests that home recording of PEF alone may not be sufficient to monitor asthma severity reliably in children.

The feasibility-seeking approach offers a systematic framework for managing and resolving intricate constraints in continuous problems, making it a promising avenue to explore in the context of floorplanning problems with increasingly heterogeneous constraints. The classic legality constraints can be expressed as the union of convex sets. However, conventional projection-based algorithms for feasibility-seeking do not guarantee convergence in such situations, which are also heavily influenced by the initialization.

Pigeon Newcastle disease (ND) is the most common viral infectious disease in the pigeon industry, caused by pigeon paramyxovirus type 1 (PPMV-1), a variant of chicken-origin Newcastle disease virus (NDV). Previous studies have identified significant amino acid differences between PPMV-1 and chicken-origin NDV at positions 347 and 349 in the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) protein, with PPMV-1 predominantly exhibiting glycine (G) at position 347 and glutamic acid (E) at position 349, while most chicken-origin NDVs show E at position 347 and aspartic acid (D) at position 349. However, the impact of these amino acid substitutions remains unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • Phenolic acids in whole grains are important for health due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, with different grain types showing varying levels of hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids.
  • These compounds help combat obesity and diabetes by influencing key signaling pathways involved in metabolism and inflammation.
  • Processing methods can affect the amount and effectiveness of phenolic acids, with thermal methods often reducing their levels, while nonthermal techniques like germination and certain new technologies may help preserve or enhance them.

Biological Cell Response to Electric Field: A Review of Equivalent Circuit Models and Future Challenges.

Biomed Phys Eng Express

September 2024

Electrical Endineering, The University of Queensland, St Lucia, Brisbane, Queensland, 4072, AUSTRALIA.

Biological cells, characterized by complex and dynamic structures, demand precise models for comprehensive understanding, especially when subjected to external factors such as electric fields (EF) for manipulation or treatment. This interaction is integral to technologies like pulsed electric fields (PEF), inducing reversible and irreversible structural variations. Our study explores both simplified and sophisticated equivalent circuit models for biological cells under the influence of an external EF, covering diverse cell structures from single- to double-shell configurations.

In recent years, there has been significant research interest in the field of immunotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) within the academic community. Given the observed variations in individual responses, despite similarities in histopathologic type, immunohistochemical index, TNM stage, or mutation status, the identification of a reliable biomarker for early prediction of therapeutic responses is of utmost importance. Conventional medical imaging techniques primarily focus on macroscopic tumor monitoring, which may no longer adequately fulfill the requirements of clinical diagnosis and treatment.
