Pathogenic fungi pose a significant threat to human health, especially given the rising incidence of invasive fungal infections and the emergence of drug-resistant strains. This requires the development of vaccines and the advancement of antifungal strategies. Recent studies have focused on the roles of fungal extracellular vesicles (EVs) in intercellular communication and host-pathogen interactions.

Transcriptomic responses of Solanum tuberosum cv. Pirol to arbuscular mycorrhiza and potato virus Y (PVY) infection.

Plant Mol Biol

November 2024

Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Biological and Veterinary Sciences, Nicolaus Copernicus University, Lwowska 1, 87-100, Torun, Poland.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) serve as both plant symbionts and allies in resisting pathogens and environmental stresses. Mycorrhizal colonization of plant roots can influence the outcomes of plant-pathogen interactions by enhancing specific host defense mechanisms. The transcriptional responses induced by AMF in virus-infected plants remain largely unexplored.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations are frequent in cancer, yet their precise role in cancer progression remains debated. To functionally evaluate the impact of mtDNA variants on tumor growth and metastasis, we developed an enhanced cytoplasmic hybrid (cybrid) generation protocol and established isogenic human melanoma cybrid lines with wild-type mtDNA or pathogenic mtDNA mutations with partial or complete loss of mitochondrial oxidative function. Cybrids with homoplasmic levels of pathogenic mtDNA reliably established tumors despite dysfunctional oxidative phosphorylation.

The dual role of lipids in chronic kidney disease: Pathogenic culprits and therapeutic allies.

Atherosclerosis

November 2024

Diabetes Complications Research Centre, Conway Institute and School of Medicine, University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. Electronic address:

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant health burden, with rising incidence and prevalence, attributed in part to increasing obesity and diabetes rates. Lipid accumulation in the kidney parenchyma and chronic, low-grade inflammation are believed to significantly contribute to the development and progression of CKD. The effect of dysregulated kidney lipid metabolism in CKD progression, including altered cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism contribute to glomerular and tubular cell injury through the activation of oxidative stress and inflammatory signalling cascades.

Insect-specific viruses (ISVs) include viruses that are restricted to the infection of mosquitoes and are spread mostly through transovarial transmission. Despite using a distinct mode of transmission, ISVs are often phylogenetically related to arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) that are responsible for human diseases and able to infect both mosquitoes and vertebrates. ISVs can also induce a phenomenon called "superinfection exclusion", whereby a primary ISV infection in an insect inhibits subsequent viral infections of the insect.
