Prognostic value of the platelet, neutrophil, monocyte, basophil, and eosinophil to lymphocyte ratios in patients with severe community-acquired pneumonia (SCAP).

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Pharmacy, Personalized Drug Therapy Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province, Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences & Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, School of Medicine, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, No.32 West Second Section, 1st Ring Road, Qingyang District, Chengdu, 610072, Sichuan, China.

Severe community-acquired pneumonia (SCAP) is a serious respiratory inflammation disease with high morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), basophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (BLR) and eosinophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (ELR) in patients with SCAP. The study retrospectively included 554 patients with SCAP, and the clinical data were obtained from the electronic patient record (EMR) system.

December 2024

Department of Zoology, Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur, 495009, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Gout is a common metabolic disorder caused by high levels of uric acid in the bloodstream, leading to painful urate crystal formations in joints.
  • Traditional treatments for gout often have side effects and may not work for everyone, making it a challenge for healthcare systems.
  • This systematic review explores phytochemical compounds as alternative treatments for gout-related high uric acid levels, analyzing over 800 studies to identify 50 compounds with potential benefits and mechanisms of action.

The era of chemotherapy began in the 1940s, which is the basis of traditional antitumor approaches and, being one of the most high-tech treatment methods, is still widely used to treat various types of cancer. A promising direction in modern medicinal chemistry is currently the creation of hybrid molecules containing several pharmacophore fragments of different structures. This strategy is successfully used to increase the therapeutic efficacy of cytotoxic agents and reduce side effects.

Oxidative stress induced by glutamate is a significant contributor to neuronal cell damage and can lead to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and ischemic brain injury. At the cellular level, oxidative stress increases Ca ion influx and reactive oxygen species (ROS), which activate the MAPK signaling pathway. Additionally, the generation of ROS causes mitochondrial dysfunction, triggering apoptosis by promoting the translocation of AIF to the nucleus from the mitochondria.

Neutralizing VHH Antibodies Targeting the Spike Protein of PEDV.

Vet Sci

November 2024

Jiangsu Key Laboratory for High-Tech Research and Development of Veterinary Biopharmaceuticals, Engineering Technology Research Center for Modern Animal Science and Novel Veterinary Pharmaceutic Development, Jiangsu Agri-Animal Husbandry Vocational College, Taizhou 225300, China.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is a highly contagious coronavirus that infect pigs' intestinal epithelial cells, causing high morbidity and mortality. Due to the rapid mutation of PEDV, vaccine efficacy is uncertain, prompting exploration of alternative treatments. Nanobodies, also known as variable heavy chain domains of heavy chain-only antibodies (VHHs), offer significant potential in biomedical applications due to their small size and high specificity.
