Plant cell walls contain a meshwork of cellulose fibers embedded into a matrix of other carbohydrate and non-carbohydrate-based biopolymers. This composite material exhibits extraordinary properties, from stretchable and pliable cell boundaries to solid protective shells. Cellulose, a linear glucose polymer, is synthesized and secreted across the plasma membrane by cellulose synthase (CesA).

The AMPA glutamate receptor (AMPAR) is the major type of synaptic excitatory ionotropic receptor in the brain. AMPARs have four different subunits, GluA1-4 (each encoded by different genes, , , and ), that can form distinct tetrameric assemblies. The most abundant AMPAR subtypes in the hippocampus are GluA1/2 and GluA2/3 heterotetramers.

Chicken egg whites contain hundreds of proteins, and are widely used in the food, biological and pharmaceutical industries. It is highly significant to study the separation and purification of egg white proteins. This review first describes the structures and functional properties of several major active proteins in egg whites, including ovalbumin, ovotransferrin, ovomucoid, lysozyme, ovomucin, ovomacroglobulin and avidin.

Conserved from yeast to humans and composed of six core subunits (Elp1-Elp6), Elongator is a multiprotein complex that catalyzes the modification of the anticodon loop of transfer RNAs (tRNAs) and in turn regulates messenger RNA decoding efficiency. Previous studies showed that yeast Elongator consists of two subassemblies (yElp1/2/3 and yElp4/5/6) and adopts an asymmetric overall architecture. Yet, much less is known about the structural properties of the orthologous human Elongator.

The molybdenum/tungsten-bis-pyranopterin guanine dinucleotide family of formate dehydrogenases (FDHs) plays roles in several metabolic pathways ranging from carbon fixation to energy harvesting because of their reaction with a wide variety of redox partners. Indeed, this metabolic plasticity results from the diverse structures, cofactor content, and substrates used by partner subunits interacting with the catalytic hub. Here, we unveiled two noncanonical FDHs in Bacillus subtilis, which are organized into two-subunit complexes with unique features, ForCE1 and ForCE2.
