FtsZ is a bacterial protein that plays a crucial role in cytokinesis by forming the Z-ring. This ring acts as a scaffold to recruit other division proteins and guide the synthesis of septal peptidoglycan, which leads to cell constriction. In its native state, the FtsZ protein from Escherichia coli (EcFtsZ) is a multi-oligomer comprising dimers, trimers, tetramers, and hexamers in a dynamic self-association equilibrium depending on its concentration.

Secondary cell wall (SCW) deposition is tightly coordinated with programmed cell death (PCD) during xylem development and plays a crucial role in plant stress responses. In this study, we characterized a serine carboxypeptidase-like gene, SCPL48, which exhibits xylem cell-specific expression patterns in stem xylem during vascular development. The scpl48 plants exhibited reduced stem xylem cell numbers, particularly vessel cells, accompanied by delayed organelle degradation during PCD and increased secondary wall thickness in xylem vessel cells.

Background: Our lab recently developed 2 mouse monoclonal antibodies that preferentially react with "distressed astrocytes". One monoclonal, 26A6, was found to react preferentially with a form of the Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein phosphatase, calcineurin (CN), that has been cleaved by calpain, to generate a 48 kDa CN fragment (∆CN). We recently published a characterization of this antibody.

Background: Caspase-cleaved tau can critically be involved in the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD), due to its ability to promote both misfolding and neurodegeneration, which ultimately leads to progressive cognitive impairment. Neuropathological studies show that caspase-cleaved tau species are abundant in AD brain neurons, yet show only a modest degree of co-occurrence with phospho-tau. This suggests that caspase-cleaved tau is an overlooked form of tau pathology that is related to the vulnerability and pathogenesis of AD.
