Article Synopsis
  • School canteens are key places to promote better nutrition among adolescents, and the rise of online lunch ordering systems presents an opportunity to influence food choices through choice architecture interventions.
  • A recent study tested a multi-strategy choice architecture intervention involving menu labeling and feedback in an online canteen setting, and it showed promising short-term results in improving students' purchasing patterns at a 2-month follow-up.
  • This study built on prior findings by assessing the long-term effectiveness of the intervention over 15 months, revealing that students in the intervention group increased their purchases of healthier "everyday" items by an average of 11.5%.

Resistance training effects on pubertal children with a risk of developing pediatric dynapenia.

Eur J Appl Physiol

July 2024

Exercise Research Laboratory, School of Physical Education, Physiotherapy and Dance, Universidade Federal Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Purpose: Many modern-day children are at risk of pediatric dynapenia (muscle weakness). We examined the effects of a 12-week resistance training (RT) program on neuromuscular function and body composition parameters in pubertal children with a risk of dynapenia.

Methods: Twelve children (13.

The existence of spot reduction, exercise-induced local body fat reduction, has been debated for half a century. Although the evidence is equivocal, no study has applied aerobic endurance training closely matching interventions for energy expenditure. Sixteen overweight (BMI: 29.

Spatial mode-count scalability in optical fibers is of paramount importance for addressing the upcoming information-capacity crunch, reducing energy consumption per bit, and for enabling advanced quantum computing networks, but this scalability is severely limited by perturbative mode mixing. We show an alternative means of light guidance, in which light's orbital angular momentum creates a centrifugal barrier for itself, thereby enabling low-loss transmission of light in a conventionally forbidden regime wherein the mode mixing can be naturally curtailed. This enables kilometer-length-scale transmission of a record ~50 low-loss modes with cross-talk as low as -45 decibels/kilometer and mode areas of ~800 square micrometers over a 130-nanometer telecommunications spectral window.

Value addition through biohydrogen production and integrated processes from hydrothermal pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass.

Bioresour Technol

February 2023

Biochemical Process Engineering, Division of Chemical Engineering, Department of Civil, Environmental, and Natural Resources Engineering, Luleå University of Technology, 971-87 Luleå, Sweden.

Bioenergy production is the most sought-after topics at the crunch of energy demand, climate change and waste generation. In view of this, lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) rich in complex organic content has the potential to produce bioenergy in several forms following the pretreatment. Hydrothermal pretreatment that employs high temperatures and pressures is gaining momentum for organics recovery from LCB which can attain value-addition.
