Two randomized groups of ulcer patients were compared. 102 patients of group 1 were treated with synthetic antioxidants (dibunol, probucol, emoxipine), while 100 patients of group 2 received a conventional treatment. Treatment results in group 1 appeared better: shortening of ulcer scarring, higher percentage of ulcer healing for 2 and 4 weeks, fall in the number of relapses during the first year of the follow-up, improvement in lipid peroxidation and antioxidant activity.

Synthetic Bilirubin-Based Nanomedicine Protects Against Renal Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury Through Antioxidant and Immune-Modulating Activity.

Adv Healthc Mater

Department of Biological Sciences, KAIST Institute for the BioCentury, Center for Precision Bio-Nanomedicine, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Daejeon, 34141, Republic of Korea.

Renal ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) is a common form of acute kidney injury. The basic mechanism underlying renal IRI is acute inflammation, where oxidative stress plays an important role. Although bilirubin exhibits potent reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging properties, its clinical application is hindered by problems associated with solubility, stability, and toxicity.

Natural pigments, or natural colorants, are frequently utilized in the food industry due to their diverse functional and nutritional attributes. Beyond their color properties, these pigments possess several biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, and neuroprotective effects, as well as benefits for eye health. This review aims to provide a timely overview of the potential of natural pigments in the pharmaceutical, medical, and food industries.

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of carbohydrates has been reported as a sustainable and green technique to produce carbonaceous micro- and nano-materials. These materials have been developed for several applications, including catalysis, separation science, metal ion adsorption and nanomedicine. Carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) obtained through HTC are particularly interesting for the latter application since they exhibit photothermal properties when irradiated with near-infrared (NIR) light, act as an antioxidant by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), and present good colloidal stability and biocompatibility.

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a fast and simple sample preparation technique that enables the enrichment of analytes, and it is used in combination with other detection techniques to provide accurate and sensitive analytical methods. SPME is widely used in environmental monitoring, food safety, life analysis, biomedicine, and other applications. The extractive coating is the core of the SPME technique, and the properties of the extractive coating greatly influence extraction selectivity and efficiency, as well as the enrichment effect.

Tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is a widely used synthetic phenolic antioxidant found in edible oils and other fried foods. Nevertheless, the excess use of TBHQ can reduce food quality and impact public health. In this paper, we reported the synthesis of a nanocomposite consisting of carbon and nitrogen co-doped nickel oxide (NiO-N/C-700), which was used to modify a pencil graphite electrode for the sensitive detection of TBHQ.
