The luminescence of bone tissue was studied during its treatment at preservation. It was found that vacuum drying as well as bone saturation with ascorbic acid and some antibiotics (streptomycin, monomycin) depressed the luminescence emission. Combined influence of these factors was found to be more difficult than for each one separately. The greatest deterioration of chemoluminescence intensity was observed during additional treatment with antimetabolite.

Nonvascularized fat grafting is a valuable technique for soft tissue reconstruction but poor survival of fat in the host environment remains a problem. A process known as cell-assisted transfer is used to enhance fat graft retention by adding stromal vascular fraction, an adipose-derived stem cell (ASC) rich content to lipoaspirate. We have recently shown that the use of melatonin, a reactive oxygen species scavenger, protects human ASCs from hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress and cell death in vitro but its role as a pharmacological adjunct in clinical fat grafting has not been studied.

Chronic granulomatous disease is a rare immune disease related to an anomaly in phagocytes NADPH oxidase. The characteristic clinical feature is early recurrent and sometimes serious infection. We report the case of a 22-month-old child who developed multifocal osteomyelitis, an unusual inaugural manifestation of chronic granulomatous disease.

Purpose: We determined the incidence of reactive oxygen species formation by spermatozoa from asthenospermic patients, and the relationship between reactive oxygen species formation and sperm motion parameters. We also assessed the efficacy of in vitro and in vivo pentoxifylline treatment of asthenospermic patients whose spermatozoa generated high reactive oxygen species levels.
Materials And Methods: Reactive oxygen species formation by spermatozoa from asthenospermic patients and fertile volunteers was measured by chemoluminescence.

The effects of recombinant human interferon (IFN)-gamma on functions of human granulocytes (PMNL) were investigated. Incubation with IFN-gamma for up to 24 h enhanced the chemoluminescent (CL) response of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) to Staphylococcus aureus, FMLP, opsonized zymosan, and PMA in a dose-dependent fashion for concentrations of 1-1000 units/mL. Short exposures to tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha also enhanced the CL responses of PMNL, but the effects IFN-gamma and TNF alpha together, at the concentrations used, were less than additive.

Distant procurement of organs for transplantation requires satisfactory preservation to reduce injury during ischemia and the initial phase of reperfusion. We have studied the mechanism of reimplantation injury after unilateral lung transplantation in isogeneic Fisher rats. The heart and lungs were removed en bloc from donor rats and preserved at 4 degrees C.
