The concentrations of dopamine (DA) and its metabolites and the levels of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), the metabolite of serotonin, were determined in discrete cerebral areas of rats 3 hr after (neutron-gamma) irradiation at 4 and 7 Gy. After the 7 Gy irradiation, no significant effect was observed. After the 4 Gy exposure, the most marked difference between irradiated and control rats was in the levels of DA and its metabolites in the striatum. We observed a decrease of DA, HVA, and DOPAC levels in the striatum and an opposite pattern in the substantia nigra. Whatever the brain area observed, an increase of 5-HIAA levels was noted.

Liquid scintillator consists of an organic solvent and one or more scintillation solutes, which can emit light pulses after absorbing X- and γ-rays, or high-energy particles. It has the characteristics of strong neutron/γ-ray (n/γ) discrimination, short decay time, unlimited size and low cost, which plays an important role in high-sensitivity and large-scale radiation detection, especially in the construction and safe operation of nuclear facilities. However, the impact of solvent selection and moisture content on the fluorescence-scintillation properties of scintillators has not been adequately investigated in the literature.

Pulse pile-up presents a significant challenge in nuclear radiation measurements, particularly in neutron-gamma pulse shape discrimination, as it causes pulse distortion and diminishes identification accuracy. To address this, we propose an optimized Support Vector Regression (SVR) algorithm for correcting pulse pile-up. Initially, the Dung Beetle Optimizer (DBO) and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) are integrated to refine the correction process, with performance evaluated using charge comparison methods (CCM) for pulse shape discrimination.

This paper describes the development of a portable neutron-gamma detector for environmental radiation monitoring based on the CLYC crystal. It can function as a gamma spectrometer, gamma dosimeter, and thermal neutron counter. The upper measurement limit of gamma dose rate is approximately 6 mSv/h by using the proposed current mode in CLYC crystal and PMT.

This paper reports on the development of a method for enhanced non-destructive assay (NDA) of radioactive waste using the novel technique neutron-gamma emission tomography (NGET). The technique relies on the detection of correlated fast neutrons and gamma rays emitted in spontaneous or induced fission. It is based on fast organic scintillators and enables sensitive detection and three-dimensional (3D) localization of the fission events.

Background: Neutron beams utilized for performing BNCT are composed of a mixture of neutrons and gamma rays. Although much of the dose delivered to the cancer cells comes from the high LET particles produced by the boron neutron capture reaction, the dose delivered to the healthy tissues from unwanted gamma rays cannot be ignored. With the increase in the number of accelerators for BNCT, a detector system that is capable of measuring gamma ray dose in a mixed neutron/gamma irradiation field is crucial.
