The objective of this study was to determine the relative risk for aneuploidy in the presence of a cardiac intraventricular echogenic focus in a patient population at high risk for aneuploidy. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients referred to a fetal diagnostic center who were undergoing amniocentesis. Records and second trimester sonograms were reviewed. Approximately 5100 comprehensive prenatal sonograms were obtained over a 2 year study period. Karyotyping by amniocentesis was done in 2412 women; 84 of the karyotypes (3.5%) were abnormal. Fetuses with no ultrasonographic findings suggestive of aneuploidy had a 1.4% (28 of 1940) prevalence of significant chromosomal abnormalities. An intraventricular echogenic focus was found in 149 of the women with karyotype analysis; 15 had an abnormal karyotype. Fetuses with intraventricular echogenic foci had a relative risk of 3.30 of aneuploidy when compared to fetuses without echogenic cardiac foci. The presence of an isolated intraventricular echogenic focus carried a relative risk of 4.08 compared to those fetuses in which ultrasonography had no finding associated with aneuploidy. In conclusion, these preliminary data indicate that presence of an intraventricular echogenic cardiac focus carries an increased risk of fetal aneuploidy.

BACKGROUND Choroid plexus tumors (CPTs) are rare brain tumors that originate from the choroid plexus epithelium and range from low-grade papillomas to overtly malignant carcinomas, and can occur in newborns. According to the World Health Organization's histological classification, atypical choroid plexus papilloma (aCPP) is an intermediate-grade (Grade II) lesion characterized by an increased mitotic rate. It is difficult to distinguish CPTs on imaging during the early stages.

We estimated the incidence of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and/or periventricular leukomalacia/echogenicity (PVL/E) in Rhesus isoimmunized infants. Seventy-one infants underwent cranial ultrasound within the first 3 days of life or discharge, whichever was earlier. Of these, 27 (38%) infants had IVH/ PVL/E.

Redox disbalance in placental cells leads to the hyperproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), it mediates the dysregulation of the maternal immune tolerance to a semi-allogenic fetus, inducing pro-inflammatory reactions, and it plays a central role in perinatal complications and neonatal disease programming. Microvesicles, which provide transplacental communication between a mother and fetus, contain microRNAs (miRNAs) that are sensitive to oxidative stress (OS) mediators and can control the balance of ROS production and utilization in target cells. In the context of this paradigm, we evaluated the markers of redox balance—MDA and 4-HNE for OS and GPx, and SOD, CAT, and GSH for the antioxidant system in the cord blood plasma of newborns diagnosed with fetal growth restriction (FGR)—by using polarography, spectrophotometry, and Western blotting.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the neurodevelopmental outcome at 18−24 months in surviving preterm infants with grades I−IV intraventricular hemorrhages (IVHs) compared to those with no IVH. Study Design: We included preterm survivors <29 weeks’ GA admitted to the Canadian Neonatal Network’s NICUs from April 2009 to September 2011 with follow-up data at 18−24 months in a retrospective cohort study. The neonates were grouped based on the severity of the IVH detected on a cranial ultrasound scan and recorded in the database: no IVH; subependymal hemorrhage or IVH without ventricular dilation (grades I−II); IVH with ventricular dilation (grade III); and persistent parenchymal echogenicity/lucency (grade IV).
